How to Fight and Win “How to fight and Win” Throughout my life I have adapted to certain things that are truly unequal, unfair, and unjust. There has always been a mountain in the way of my goal or dream. But the mountains of life aren't always there to make things difficult. They are there to make you fight for what you want. And I feel that you have to fight to succeed this day and age. My fight is on, for me to go on to college. My dream now is to start and complete the master degree in professional counseling. While working on my endeavors in becoming a counselor. I would hope to gain as much information to transform how people view mental health. The professional degree is more than just a piece of paper. The second reason for earning my master degree as a counselor is to aide military soldiers and family members. Being a role model comes with a price. Many times I have asked myself what is that one thing that gets me motivated and it always comes back to aiding the people. I feel that a professional degree will allow me to become a role model for my husband and for my son. I could then show them that I took all of the mountains, the inequalities, the unfairness, and the injustice and made it work for me. I would use this degree not only for my family but as a platform. This platform would become a mouth piece for people who have been rejected by people. I would become a counselor who enjoys reaching out and not being fearful of getting my hand dirt. With faith, hard work, and perseverance anything is possible. Anything can be achieved once you set your mind to it, and that's just what I want to let them know. I can always find ways to aid and assist my family and friends in their goals. My goal is to go on and use my degree to service others that may not have resources or knowledge. Knowledge of why seeking professional help is necessity. Later in the paper the understanding that talking with a professional councilor doesn’t necessary mean a person is crazy. I have always wanted to be a council or missionary for as long as I can remember. I enjoy working with people, and making people feel valued . Experience There is a saying that goes experience is your best teacher. Having witness a family friend Nancy who suffered from mental illness really came home for many in the community as well as my family and me. As an African American our community views things very different. A trip to see a counselor back in the day was not going to happen. What happen in the family stays in the family. I will share with you a lady in my neighborhood call Nancy. Nancy was not diagnosed until later in her life. After the death of her mother and father her sister was given full custody of Nancy. Nancy sister took it among herself and ignored what the neighborhood people would think are say. Nancy sister was not at all worried about the cliché of putting her family business in the street. She took Nancy to get the help she needed. At some point Nancy conditions improved with mental health services and medication. Mental illness is such a problem in our country that I feel there should be more people to work with the mind. During a recent research The New York Times recently reported that because of cutbacks in funding for community –based mental health facilities across the state, many needing psychiatric help don’t get it until they act out and land in prison. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and neurologists are people who are shied away from. The reason is that many people are in denial that they have a problem. Professional counselors help heal people from severe depression, military families and soldier’s wife, being a soldier wife myself. I realize the professional counseling degree will open up many opportunities. I think that if people weren't so afraid of admitting that they have a problem, mental illness, alcohol, drug abuse and other abuse situations it would be at an all time low research shows that. There are people who need mental help, or people to listen to them who aren't getting it. If they were getting the help that they needed, many crimes would be constrained. With a college education, it allows professionals to reach people just like Nancy. Then I can be the best that I can be for myself, my son, and family friends like Nancy. Once I have completed my master degree in professional counseling and other educational goal, I will use it to help community based mental health. Not just for me but to help others on the fight of life and to let them know we all can be winners at this thing called life.
