Homosexual Marriages vs Heterosexual Marriages In the 20th Century homosexual rights and marriage was nonexistent. However, today Homosexual Marriage seems to have two major issues i.e. political and/or religious. In my opinion, homosexual Couples should not be allowed to marry or adopt children because it is not supported by religion, morals, and biological factors. The 8th Amendment mentions the freedom of speech and freedom of living life. Today, Homosexuality is taken out of context because a marriage should be a union between one man and one woman. Sometimes the arguments that appear to be persuasive have to be examined rather closely to discover that they should not be persuasive. (Mosser 2010) Homosexual marriages are not supported in most religions because it is written that God’s purpose is for a man and a woman to join as one and reproduce. Many people of faith look to both sacred texts such as the bible, and tradition for guidance on this issue. Homosexuality is never mentioned in the bible as an acceptable behavior. In some countries homosexuality is a cause for death and imprisonment. An individual is not born as a homosexual but choose to live that lifestyle as a preference. Some men and women prefer give and receive love from the same sex. God made man and woman and placed them together with the intention for more men and women relationships. Therefore, God did not make the same sex individuals to be together and would not allow someone to reproduce in such a manner. The Media has taken the religion aspect of heterosexual marriages out of perspective and made people feel that homosexual marriages are acceptable. If someone chooses to have a homosexual relationship that is their choice but allowing a homosexual union to be legal is a clear misrepresentation of God’s plan. Homosexual marriages are not supported by morals and values. The common argument is that homosexual marriages are immoral. ( Sberman 1992). It is an attack on the family and will destroy families and cause division. Many people are not comfortable with public affection particularly from homosexual couples. If homosexual couples are allowed to marry each other they would want to show public affection for each other just the same as heterosexual couples. Recently, I had lunch with a friend in DuPont Circle which is a very popular gay community in DC. There were many homosexual couples kissing each other in the restaurant. I was very shocked and immediately thought to myself that I couldn’t imagine explaining this type of behavior to my children. Legalizing homosexual marriages would force many families to provide explanations to young children over such a controversial issue. How can parents explain a public display of two men kissing after their wedding ceremony on television or on the cover of a magazine' Accepting homosexual marriages will go against the traditional morals and values that have been taught to the past and present generations. Homosexual marriages are incapable to reproduce children because of biological factors. Homosexual couples cannot biologically have children and must use other resources to have a family. One of the major issues that many homosexual couples are facing is being able to adopt a child. There have been many legal battles regarding same-sex marriages having the right to adopt children and raise healthy, happy, and loving families. Yes, there are many children who need loving parents and a good homes but I do not feel that people who are choosing to live a homosexual lifestyle should raise children. Growing up in a home with parents of the same sex will confuse the children and cause many psychological problems. Some of the issues that could result from a child in a homosexual marriage are depression, emotional stress, and anxiety issues. A child could feel depressed and ashamed of their parents among their friends, social groups, and community. A child’s parents are a great influence in their life and if a child’s parents are the same sex they may think that homosexuality is acceptable and normal. Psychologists such as Sigmund Freud that were mentioned in Adult Development and Life Assessment have taught us that the nature or the environment has a great impact on how a child is developed. If we permitted homosexual marriages it will have a negative effect on children and their environment. Children will be confused and experience emotional problems. Most experts in parenting skills also emphasize the importance of teaching children a set of values, then reinforcing their behaviors when they honor those values (Witt, 2010). The ideal parenting situation is to give to another generation the love and the blessings of a nurturing and devoted family that they experienced in their own upbringing, and still others wish to provide a child with the kind of loving environment that they themselves never received. Heterosexual couples are the best possible environments in which people should raise children. Some people believe that homosexuals should have the same rights in housing, jobs, and public accommodations. Some may also believe that same-sex couples should have equal access to government benefits including marriage. Legal marriage is designed to protect intimacy in the relationship between a man and a woman. Marriage laws in the United States are determined State by State. Some states that have supported same sex marriages are: Vermont, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. While, other states such as Vermont, Connecticut, and Massachusetts support domestic partnership. Nearly three people in four in the U.S. oppose gay marriage, almost the same proportion as are otherwise supportive of gay rights. Many same-sex couples want the public to provide a justifiable explanation to deny the institution of marriage to gay people and it should have never been considered a lawful matter. Recently news reports have confirmed that same-sex life partners often have been denied a voice in their partner's medical decisions, funerals, etc. The recent controversy regarding homosexual marriages has paved the way for much discussion concerning families, parenting, and equality for lesbians and gays.( Gallagher, 1996) Most states have passed laws that deny same-sex couples from marrying. A few states have offered Civil Unions to same-sex couples. Civil unions are a confirmation of partnership similar to a marriage but it is not a legal marriage and is not recognized outside of that particular state. In 2004, President George Bush was in favor for amending the Constitution to make marriage between a man and woman the only legal form of marriage in the United States.(P.6) There is a lot of controversy and information regarding same sex marriages in the recent political debates. It will be an interesting debate among many politicians to either support or be opposed to Homosexual marriage. I am curious to see if politicians and citizens would agree with me that homosexual couples should not be allowed to marry or adopt children based on the lack of support of religion, morals, and biological factors regarding this very controversial issue.
