Being of Mexican decent, I find that we were subject to many different groups of racial changes. Many of the immigrants that made their way to the United States met with difficulties from prejudice, racism, stereotyping and segregation. In the early years of migration to the United States, there seem to be a huge problem with racism and Mexicans still seem to deal with these difficulties today. There have been documented hate crimes against the Mexican race even, such as in the article found in the “Migration, The World Affairs Blog Network.” Mexican migration does not always come out of Mexico alone; there are other countries such as Ecuador, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Spain, or even Venezuela. Either way they are all from a Mexican decent, even if their families migrated here and their children were born in the United States. Their family heritage is still of a Mexican background, making them vulnerable to racial hate, prejudice and stereotyping.
Segregation for our race was something that was not easy; we were considered outsiders due to our ethnic backgrounds. Employment for immigrants did not come easily either, employers frown upon the lack of education from migrants. Finding employers that could provide employment for unskilled labor was not easy, the reduction in wages for unskilled labor and it was offer very little opportunities and it seemed to increase the welfare being given to lower waged families. Like my grandfather, he found himself in this same situation when he began employment in the U.S. he met with resistance and prejudice in the companies he worked for. Over the years he had been employed; like many other immigrants he spoke the Spanish language more than he did the English language but quickly learned by being surrounded by it on a daily basis.
In 2001, Mexican government expressed strong support for illegal-aliens receiving amnesty, under the Bush Administration, expecting a proposal to a New Mexican work program. This would allow the government to looking into the education, welfare use, and economical changes giving migrants a better start in our country as they go through the work programs. To some this may look like reverse discrimination, if you have U.S. born citizens that have a lack of education will they be over looked to provide special treatment to migrants wishing to have a better start' This county was built on opportunity and equality yet, some Americans may seem the special treatment as a form of discrimination against them. That is where our laws of discrimination would come into play giving everyone a fair chance for employment.
This would give way to affirmative action, allowing the migrants the same opportunities all Americans have. Giving them the education they desire, buying homes, insurance, and employment. These opportunities were not available for migrants early on; unskilled laborers didn’t get the opportunity to advance in companies until an affirmative action was set in place. Now, all persons in the work fields they have chosen can find themselves advancing or going back to school to get degrees for advancement. The same opportunities that were for so long only given to Americans are now being shared by any immigrant that has now become a U.S. citizen.
I relate so much to the Mexican group given I am Mexican decent and my family had migrated from Mexico looking for a better opportunity in life. Mainstream cultures today in the U.S. have a large population of people that have found they are migrating from other counties looking for that better life. The equality of life for migrants took time, governments had to come together and show a means for the opportunity, and the people of the United States found themselves changing also. There will never been a world completely without racial discrimination, but to keep an open mind that we are all human looking for a better life for our families is something we can all relate to in one way or another. The United States is known as the land of opportunity and freedom, not all countries have this reputation. As long as people of different cultures and countries are looking for that better life, I believe we need to open our minds to the fact that this nation was founded by people of other countries and nationalities.
