Difficulty was not just from translation of Spanish to English, but from different dialects of the Spanish language too. More and more Mexicans are voting and they tend to vote on the Democratic side more than the Republic. Politics have played a major role in Mexican American lives; deportation is one way that has had a negative affect on them even today. Education is the one key part of the community setting for the young people; with the introduction of bi-lingual education, Hispanic children have started to gain on others in this area. Due to labeling as lazy people, Mexican Americans deal with being thrown over for employment, as a result creating a truth in the stereotype of being poverty stricken. The strongest group any Mexican American belongs to is their religious belief group; usually the Roman Catholic Church is the church to which they belong. In the past the church stayed out of the affairs of the immigrants and the troubles they had assimilating to the United States. Today the church is getting more involved in the community and has made an effort to make sure that Spanish speaking clergy are in the parishes. Mexican Americans have a strong family and they are more bonded then white Americans are in this area. This can be good and bad, good due to the strong bond formed and support during times of need but, bad because it can cause isolation and discourage the younger set from leaving the family for jobs and advanced education. In the end it looks like Mexican Americans are making efforts to fit in to society in the US. This assimilation may sadly cause them to lose a part of their heritage, and family values. The end result may not be a positive for them, but it looks like it is something that is going to happen regardless of the fight to stop it. Puerto Ricans have set out to make English a second language and many speak it fluently as well. With the island of Puerto Rico being a US owned territory this has been a bit easier for them to achieve. With the Jones Act in 1917 the natives of Puerto Rico became citizens of the United States. Although, they seem to have some issues with other Hispanic groups claiming to be citizens of Puerto Rico therefore their papers get scrutinized closer then other US citizens. Puerto Ricans are subject to the selective service registration, military service and all federal laws, but can not vote in presidential elections and have no representation in congress. There seems to be a color gradient in the social sect of Puerto Ricans, this generally permits more give in prejudices and is not likely to pose sanctions based on skin tone alone. Puerto Ricans have maintained their culture in celebrations and holidays, this allows for them to assimilate to the western world's views but still keep their heritage strong. Puerto Rico is considered poorer then a large majority of the US's poorest areas. The economy is strong based on a Caribbean standpoint. The economy is in trouble as the unemployment rate is three times that of the Mainland. Also the per capita is less then half of some of our poor states in the US. Religion is a strong base for many Puerto Rican families's and most is Catholic. They have strong views that they maintain and this keeps the family unit cohesive and strong as a result.  Puerto Rican's are also a strong family based group to the extent that many young adults tend to stay closer to the main branch of the family and lose out on better opportunities for themselves. The bond and support system is strong and family tends to come above all others. Status: The Puerto Ricans continue to face challenges in the assimilation to the US society. With the steady growth in population and unemployment Puerto Ricans face an uncertain future. This group of people needs to decide what they want with in the infrastructure of their island politically. It is here that they will either make something for themselves or they will continue to decline. Almost all Cuban Americans write and speak English, though a large percent like to watch and read Spanish media, this includes television and newspapers.  Cuban American's are a strong Republican group and vote on many issues that interest them. They have a high voting average as well as fear of communism. Cuban Americans tend to stick together they are a very social set of people and do well in a more traditional setting. They maintain a strong heritage in their celebrations and holidays. Cuban-Americans are steeped in a strong work ethic and are among of some of the most monetarily flourishing of immigrant groups. They are highly industrial and make good incomes. The majority of Cuban American's are Catholics, although there is a small group that is Jewish. The Catholic Cuban Americans are devout as are the Jewish ones. They base so much of their family traditions and values on their religious beliefs. Many Cubans have assimilated well in to society their family consists of an elder who is in charge of major decisions. Where other Hispanic groups have a more submissive female group, Cuban Americans do not. Women work out side of the home often and even have a say in decisions. Cuban American's are a group that has made the most strides in assimilation then any other. They know what they want and have made sure that they have worked hard to achieve it. They are more readily accepted in White society then any other Hispanic group out there. Costa Ricans are a group of people who speak Spanish but it is spoken more slowly and clearly then other Hispanic groups. Costa Ricans speak a different form of Spanish then other Spanish speaking groups does. They speak what is considered a more formal dialect of the language, and there are few who speak English well or at all. Costa Ricans did not flee their native lands to come to America they chose to immigrate to this land in the search of better work, research opportunities and education. Costa Ricans have a tendency to vanish in the English-speaking mass or shape working and friend associations with other Hispanics. Costa Rican's are a group of people from a predominantly poor area of the world who are doing well in the US. They are hard workers who excel at their trades. They are not lazy and tend to make decent choices in the area of money. Roman Catholicism is the official, traditional, and dominant religion for most Costa Ricans. Here they stick to the strong conservatism of the religion and base almost all of the family values on the doctrine of the church. They maintain the religious values from their childhood and often look for a church where they are comfortable, Spanish speaking is preferred. Costa Ricans have in general very conservative family standards. A family, to many must have a father, a mother, and children. A strong family value and relations are a major part of their heritage. The elderly are a part of the immediate family structure often a grandmother lives in the same home as her grandchildren. The Costa Ricans of the United States tend to do well for themselves, they stick close to one another and have maintain their heritage while assimilating to the western world. Although many Hispanic groups are assumed to be similar they all have strong differences. Cuban Americans want to be more assimilated, while Mexican Americans tend to fight change and are more at home in the environment that is of their homeland. Puerto Ricans are Citizens at birth and do not have to apply for citizenship, but tend to be scrutinized more strongly then other Hispanics in their own land. They all have fought hard to make better lives for themselves and they all want to be here in the United States. This is what makes them exactly the right people to immigrate to this land. The desire and need for a better life.
