Running head: Hire Right Hire Right In the current economy and during layoffs at many companies it is very important to hire the correct person. In society today many people are looking for jobs, and willing to take whatever is available. Each position has a certain set of requirements to fulfill with expertise. An organization must choose the proper candidate for the position. Although the hiring steps are time consuming, it is very important to know the process, issues management may face, and how it can affect the workplace. Every company has their own particular hiring process. It will begin with the need for a new employee. A position will open or be created and then need to be filled. Once the decision has been made to hire, the next step is to put out an advertisement. Most businesses use the Internet to post jobs on sites such as; Craigslist, Monster.com, Yahoo HotJobs or their own job boards. Sometimes the company will use the newspaper or college job postings. With help from the human resource department the company can construct the proper job description. This will help only qualified candidates to apply. Many companies are overloaded with resumes, and it is difficult to look at each and every one. One of the ways to weed out candidates quickly is by giving specific directions when applying. If the person interested in the job does not follow directions, they are immediately disqualified. Employers often think that if the applicant cannot follow simple directions, they will not be able to handle everyday tasks. This process may take awhile but it will help save time later. After the candidates have been chosen they will be called in for an interview, and one will be selected for the position. Managers on different levels face ethical issues on a daily basis. In chapter eight of Managing Business Ethics they say “The most important groups to an organization are the people who pay to have the goods made, the people who make them, the people who buy them and the place where the goods are made” (Trevino & Nelson, 2007, chap. 8). Everyone involved in the company plays a role, and they are important in different ways. The issues that arise may be internal or outside of the workplace. Internal issues may be a conflict of interest, decision-making problems, or workplace performance. A good example of conflict of interest would be: If you are a manager who is hiring another manager for the company, and there are two qualified candidates. One of them is your long time best friend, and the other is just an applicant with a college degree, better references and more experience. If you choose your friend it is seen as playing favorites. It is the managers’ responsibility to the corporation and others involved to uphold morals and be a role model. In this situation picking your friend is not in the best interest of the company. Other employees will get jealous or offended by playing favorites with their best friend. Loyalty to one another is a major attribute, and is appreciated by others. The relationship between social and ethically responsible management practices are that they have to set standards. The hiring and training must be the same for all new employees. If a manager hires someone who does not have the experience and qualifications that the job requires it is a disservice to the company and society. This will cause fellow employees to be upset. If the new hire cannot do the job at hand, others will have to pick up the slack, creating extra work for them. The managers have an obligation to everyone involved to hire and educate all employees. If the employee knows his or her exact tasks and job description they can excel. This will lead to being a high performer and an asset to the company. Ethical issues arise in the workplace very often. I have been in the hiring seat many times. I have hired for both corporate offices’ and restaurants. It is not an easy process to hire an employee, but it has to be done. The manager and whoever is training must follow procedure and follow each step. In a restaurant it is the managers’ responsibility to guarantee that the applicant has wine and liquor knowledge, understand food concepts, and have serving experience. Recently, the restaurant I work in began to hire servers and hosts. We always review the application and check references before interviewing or offering a position. A woman came in with an application and asked to speak with the owner. Normally the owner has nothing to do with interviewing, but met with her anyway. He told the managers that we had to hire her because she was a relative of a friend. We did not think she would be a good fit, but had to offer her the position. She does a mediocre job, but on her shifts she is not positive, and never smiles. She does enough to get by, so the restaurant cannot let her go without a good reason. If the restaurant does not handle the situation properly it can be followed by a number of lawsuits for wrongful termination. This can also cause stress for the employee, managers, and coworkers. For now, we will try to encourage and educate her so she can remain an employee. Ultimately, those who work directly within the organization should do the hiring because they understand the needs of the position. The entire employment process is important to the overall operation. Each step has a purpose and is taken seriously. This will make certain that the best candidate was chosen for the position. Each employee must play their correct part in order to help the business run efficiently. Every position requires a set of skills and the right person for it. That is why managers do the employing of the business. Hiring a new employee not only affects the management, but also the coworkers and customers. The managers know the issues they face and must be aware of any legal matters or if litigation is possible. They will always try to employ high performers to benefit the organization and fellow employees. References Trevino, L., & Nelson, K. (2007). Managing Business Ethics. : John and Wiley Sons.
