Running head: OBTAINING HIGHER EDUCATION IS A TOOL FOR SUCCESS Obtaining Higher Education is a Tool for Success for ESTP Type Personalities Felicia Willis University of Phoenix Management/521 Dr. Ray Benedetto December 03, 2009 Obtaining Higher Education is a Tool for Success for ESTP Type Personalities Many people in today’s society believe that returning to school for a higher level of education is not needed to be successful in the job market. The answer to the above statement can be true for some. Even though he or she does not need a higher level of education to achieve success, a higher level of education can open doors for those wanting to start a new career and help achieve a goal of personal growth because people with higher education are successful and people with a higher level of education do better economically. While pursuing a degree of higher education it is important to know what personality trait he or she possesses. Knowing one’s self can help with being successful in understanding what strengths and weaknesses are possessed. In the interactive tool titled the Jungian personality assessment test, a person can determine what traits he or she possesses. For example, an Extraverted Sensing Thinking Perceiving (ESTP) type personality is considered to be a doer. The ESTP type personality deal with things rationally and logically, The ESTP personality are go getters and are risk takers. ESTP type personalities like to live in the world of action and jump right into things. ESTP type personality’s handles decision making based on facts and logic. Taking others feeling into account is not a trait of the ESTP personality. An ESTP personality type would do well in pursing a master’s degree because of the traits he or she possesses. He or she would do well in the corporate world because ESTP’s have a natural abundance of energy and enthusiasm, which makes them natural entrepreneurs. To become a successful manager he or she must take into account personal experience and research. A good master’s program would train students on how to incorporate past experiences into decision making. A manager must be able to delegate and prioritize tasks. A successful manager must stick to commitments and make sure that tasks are completed. The ESTP type personality have the ability to become successful in obtaining the traits of a successful manager and pursuing a master’s degree for this type personality can shape an individual into a successful entity in the corporate world. Obtaining a higher level of education helps with the transitioning process of starting a new career. Changing careers can be a difficult task to achieve without the necessary experience in the new field desired. Being in a field that makes one feel as if there is no more room for growth can happen in mid life and it would be very difficult to be able to switch fields entirely without networking or having the experience needed for the position. Without seeking a higher level of education it would be difficult to compete with new graduates seeking out the same field in the job world. A bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite in today’s job market so having it does not stand out as much as having a master’s degree. A Master’s degree will give graduates a more competitive edge in the corporate world (Russell, 2009, ¶ 2). More companies today are requiring a master’s degree to fill positions in management within the organization and with ever changing technology it will soon become a prerequisite for many jobs (Russell). Pursuing a master’s degree helps to build a network and self knowledge about the desired field. Having access to others in the same field of study gives opportunity for increasing one’s knowledge and understanding of the business and meeting others in the same field can increase the chance of moving up in the field or even with other companies. A higher level of education can provide personal growth. A 1998 report published by the Institute for Higher Education Policy reviews the individual benefits that college graduates enjoy, including higher levels of savings, increased personal/professional mobility, improved quality of life for their offspring, better consumer decision making, and more hobbies and leisure activities (Porter, 2002, ¶ 6). Continuing education allows room for life learning, more open mindedness and rationale. Having a higher level education not only benefits financially but it can boost self esteem and increase self confidence and possession of the two traits can be very beneficially throughout the different walks of life. A feeling of accomplishment can increase morale and lead to a more productive life. People with a higher level of education do better economically. Statistics have shown that having a master’s degree increases income levels. According the United States Census Bureau in 2004, people with master’s degrees earn an average of 23 percent more than people with bachelor’s degrees. Obtaining a higher education can improve career prospects and allow room for progression in the chosen career. In conclusion, although having a higher degree is not needed to be successful, having a higher degree will open doors for starting a new career and provide personal growth for two main reasons. First, people with higher education do better economically. Most importantly, people with higher education are successful and have a sense of accomplishment. An individual that is an ESTP type personality possess all the strengths and will power to achieve the goal of obtaining a degree in higher education and because he or she are know go getters, obtaining the goal of lifelong learning and receiving all the benefits of higher learning is an obtainable goal.
