PERSONAL HERITAGE ASSESSMENT EMMANUEL OKOROAFOR GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY This paper will focus on the usefulness of the heritage assessment in evaluating the needs of individual as a whole, three families cultural perspective to health maintenance, protection, and restoration.The writers personal health views, with respect to the culture. Heritage can be defined as the extent to which an individual or groups of people’s lifestyle reflects tribal culture. It is a continuous process that passess from generation to generation. And it is also possible to accept some aspect of culture and reject others due to acceptance of a modern culture or a new way of doing things. Living within the norms of the traditional culture and modern living outside norms of the tradition( Spector,2004) Culture can be defined as the learned, shared, and transmitted values, beliefs, norms, and way of life of a particular group of people.Blais et al (2006). The usefulness of the personal heritage assessment stems from the design that elicit answers from the individual considering cultural background, religion, family structure, society , education , nutrition, language, and migration and the new culture if any. As nurse s it is very important to understand this aspect of nursing so that patient will be approached and properly taken care of. A persons cultural background ,religion, and belief greatly influences a person’s health and their response to medical care. In taking care of patient culture and background plays an important role in helping the nurse take care of the patient. Three different families were interviewed , Nigerian family, the filipino family and the Amercan family.These family explained that the views of the individual familes refelect the views of those interviewed. The philipine family explained that they are catholics and still goes to church weekly here in the united states.Parent and grand parents are from the philipines and still lives there.The man is the head of the house and the wife is the home maker, hard working, take care of children, most times manages the finance. They still believe that super natural powers can affect health. They believe in eating healthy food as part of the health maintenance, exercise as prevention and promotion and the use of herbal remedies, soups and bids.They drink Tinola soup which is a traditional soup. Philipines still has some health chellenges related to poverty and corruption. It is reported that 6 out of 10 philipines will die without seing a doctor.(Bernabe,20210). The philipines are strong in the tradition and the family believes that both immediate family and inlaws are all members of the family. The second family is the Nigeria family . The Nigeria family are from the eastern part of the country. They migrated to USA ten years ago. Parents and grand parents are all fron the eastern Nigeria. They are Christians and chatolic. They believe that traditional food is very healthy. They also believe that an illness can be coursed by an enemy .Back in the day people use to wear beads to their waste and little charms strapped to the neck. They believe these charms will protect them from the strike of the evil one . The family made it clear that western culture has influenced their family greatly. The children cannot speak IBO language and also cannot eat some of the traditional food. Nigeria is still struggling with poverty and corruption and people dying with curable diseases. The family explained that on the individual basis people are trying to promote and restore health. The third family is an American family from Mississippi but has been living in TX for over ten years. The parents and grand parents are all from USA. They are Christians by faith but not active, goes to church occasionally. Believes in some traditions that has been carried from generation to generation, eating of turkey for the thanksgiving. Health promotion is popular in America. A lot of awareness is been made concerning nutrition and heart disease, and nutrition and diabetes. The family is aware of the obesity problem in the USA The government has health programs established to promote health. There are many programs in place to educate the people on health promotion, prevention, and restoration. zzzzzzz ======Reference placeholder, don't delete====== zzzzz | The most important difference between the three cultures examined is the level of established government involvement in the promotion of health. In the philippines and Nigeria the there is less government participation even if there is any it is marred by corruptions.while in the USA government had programs to promote health.organizations and established institutions like the CDC, FDA are constantly releasing research results to the public that educates and empower individuals to take steps to promote health in different communities. In conclusion the heritage assessment takes into consideration different aspect of a patient from physical to cultural background and psychsocial aspect of a person. The community and family etiology becomes important in the promotion process. As nurses ito assist the patient is very useful to use a tool to gather all the information needed to assist the patient better.The writer is from Nigeria and share a similar belief to the family from Nigeria,. Cooking and eating at home is healthy . It is very important that food is made with fresh vegetables and freshmeat. There are lots of walking to do that takes care of exercise. Here in America we have to go the Gyms to exercise. In the different cultures there is something that is done to promote good health, prevent illness, maintain health and restore health.
