A Different Outlook
Explaining concepts through different perspectives can be a difficult task. It is almost impossible to see a certain idea the exact same way as another person does. Their perspective is different because of the way they were raised, or because of the environment they grew up in. That is why Helmholtz Watson is the perfect character to try to explain with through his view.
The first day with Helmholtz by my side started off fairly regularly, until we got to school. It seemed as though all of the girls were attracted to him because they all would give him double takes or an extended glance as he walked by. Helmholtz then saw an attractive looking girl. He went and asked her to “be promiscuous” with him. She ran away, screaming. Helmholtz looked very confused after the incident. He didn’t understand why the girl didn’t object. I explained to him that in our world one must get to know a girl before they can engage in sexual activities. He still had a confused look on his face, but nodded and said, “Okay.” The two of us then proceeded to class. The first class we went to was English. I told Helmholtz that regular humans learned by having the material taught to them, instead of preprogrammed into their brains. It was odd for him to sit in the class, because he had to resist the urge to answer all the questions. He didn’t want to stand out, so he just sat there and paid attention to how the other humans reacted. Helmholtz could see when humans understood a concept, and when they pretended that they did. This was due to his superior intelligence. At the conclusion of English class, the next class we attended was Statistics. Watson didn’t hold back his abilities in this class, as he answered many questions that the teacher proposed. Students looked at him in awe, as they could not believe that the new student knew more about statistics on his first day than they did in three weeks of study. His superior Alpha programming and sleep teaching made him this way. Helmholtz progressed through the day, yet nothing too out of the ordinary happened. He had plenty of chances to display his intellect, and many ladies noticed him. He got a couple of girls’ numbers, but that is nothing out of the ordinary. After school, we adjourned to tennis practice. I explained to him that our type of humans had to practice at something in order to get better. I gave him a racket to use, and he was great. I was almost sad, because he was better than me his first time, and I had been playing for three years already. We played a match against each other, and he beat me pretty handily. I felt ashamed. But practice got over, and I drove him home.
The next day, Helmholtz got bored in his classes, so he decided to take soma to “relieve the pain” of sitting in the classroom. The teachers caught him. He made it easy for them, as he was asleep for a long period of time. Helmholtz was sent to the principal’s office, where he received his punishment: a detention. I scolded him, and told him that he could not just take soma whenever he wanted. Actually, I recommended he not take it at all, as there is no good need for it. I told him that in our society we face our problems instead of taking drugs to try to combat them. Well, the intelligent part of the society. If people take drugs in this society, there are consequences. It is not encouraged, unlike in Helmholtz’s world. Also, the effects of drugs taken here can either be positive or negative, depending on the amount and type of drug.
Later on, I asked Helmholtz what he thought of society in this era. He said that he sees both of the good parts of the worlds. But he favors this world because of the emotion it shows. He said he got bored with the other world, so that is why he decided to magically travel to ours. He also likes the fact that what he writes does not feel pointless. In the old world, he did not feel like he had a purpose. He felt as though his work at the university was tedious and boring. But, since there is emotion in his new environment, he is invigorated with life and inspiration. His only fear is that people will use too much emotion to cloud their judgments, instead of using logic to sort it out, like they do in his former place of residence. But all in all, society should be just fine as long as people take time to make their decisions and do not act impulsively and rashly.
