Exam 3 – Jacaranda
Q1 a) The organisational structure is the way that the organisation is organised according to who does what in the organisation. BHP Billiton would have a large organisational structure, due to being a large scale organisation.
b) The mission statement expresses why an organisation exists, Its purpose and how it will function. Toyota would have a mission statement to achieve its set objectives.
c) Strategic objectives are long term objectives, or planning usually over 3 to 5 years. Rip curl would have a strategic objective because it assists in determining where in the market the organisation wants to be and what it wants to achieve in relation to its competitors.
Q2 a) Televest Pty Ltd would be classified as a large scale organisation because it employs 1024 people, has revenue of $ 485 million and operates in 3 different countries.
b) Televest Pty Ltd would contribute to the Australian economy because it contributes to employment for people to work and the large scale organisation also contributes to infrastructure growth by providing communication to the Australian economy.
Q3 a) The board of directors has the most responsibility in the organisation and they plan the vision, mission statement and the strategic(long-term) planning.
b) The regional senior managers would also contribute to helping out the board of directors and the responsibilities they do within the organisation.
Q4 a) Functional Management Structure
b) Televest could evaluate organisation performance by key performance indicators. This may be by the number of sales made in the organisation or by doing customer and staff surveys to measure how satisfied the customers are with the organisation.
Q5) The management style adopted by the general manager, Don Russell is the Autocratic management style. He basically tells what decisions have been made (one way communication) and staff have no input in the decisions being made.
Q6) The strengths of the autocratic management style in Global Optics is that communication is top-down, which means that the directions and procedures are clear. The control is centralised so that time is used efficiently, and problems are solved quickly due to not doing consultation. Decisions are made quickly and are not time consuming. This disadvantage of this management style is that there is no employee input which means they don’t feel valued. Lower level staff may not have responsibilities so the job satisfaction decreases and absenteeism and staff turnover occurs.
Q7 a) An alternative management style that Don Russell could have used is the participative management style. Which is one where the manager unites with staff to make decisions together.
b) The participative management style might have been more appropriate to Global because the manager unites with staff to make decisions together and this way the employees will feel valued in the organisation and they can also put their input within the organisation.
PART B
Q 8) a)i) Up-to-date technology is one strategy which operations managers use to optimise operations. Robotics are highly specialised forms of technology capable of complex tasks and which saves time.
b)ii) Inventory control ensures that consists are minimised and that the operations system has access to the right amount of inputs. Inventory control software provides managers with precise knowledge of quantities and locations of stock. This would be done by using technology.
c)i) I would use a process layout.
ii) Process layout:
iii) The two major costs that must be balanced in managing inventory is the productivity, amounts of inputs and outputs and the elimination of waste.
iv) The quality control techniques I would use would be inspections at various points in the production process, and to check for problems or defeats.
