Hella Hyphy Hyphy Movement is a musical movement. Hyphy started in the Bay area of California and means to be hyper. Mac Dre a rapper was the founder of the Hyphy movement in the 1980’s.The music consists of much bass and untraditional sounds in music like cowbells and electronic sounds. Hyphy is a way of life; many sayings and slang terms emerged from it, there’s a unique dance style that made me like dancing, and it’s changed my style of clothes, ultimately changing my life. The Hyphy Movements creation of new words made the English language artistic. My brother introduced me to this awesome sound. He used the word “hella” in a sentence and it made me very curious. I started using it when I wanted to extenuate how important something is. My friends caught on and it spread like influenza. I went home and told my brother and he was proud. From that point on my brother showed me many Hyphy artists from the bay area at an early age. E-40 an artist taught me many terms. The terms and sayings I picked up shaped my everyday conversations. I had to learn how to only use my street talk for certain situations. I look back and realize before learning these fun to say words I was kind of shy. Soon E-40 is even coming out with a dictionary. I am going to get it and expand my knowledge of street terms. The sound of Hyphy is so unique there has to be a dance style to go along with it. Mac Dre introduce the dance moves “going dumb”, “doing the bird”, “putting up your T’s” and “the Thizz face”. The Thizz face is when you scrunch your nose and make a frowning face. Going dumb is just loosening up and doing whatever you want. The rest of the moves are pretty self explanatory in the name. The people that can dance do a thing called T.U.R.F dancing. It means taking up room on the floor. I’m not great at dancing, so I don’t really turf but I just try my own version of turfing and mix in Mac Dre’s moves. My favorite thing to do is slide around. It makes me feel like I am floating. The dancing I learned from the Hyphy movement boosted my dancing charisma by having more moves. Before dancing wasn’t that fun when I only had a few moves .Now you can tell my Hyphy swagger like an eye sore. The dance that we do gives us a certain image and I carry that image with pride. Hopefully I can learn the new form of dancing that looks interesting and has a lot of hand moves to incorporate with my sliding. Hyphy music shaped me like clay. I was different from the get go and this movement gave me something to latch on to. The concepts behind the music made me enjoy music a lot more then ever. The concepts consisted of great stories most of the time or it had extraordinary sounds which were uplifting. All of the sounds in the music made my cells bounce around at an alarming rate making my body get mesmerized and helplessly dance. I have even changed my clothes to be more loud and unique from the music. I wear many different vibrant colors and pristine shoes and make sure that I keep my clothes in mint condition. I wear a Bay area hat every day showing my love too. My favorite hat to wear is anything that has an Oakland Athletics logo. Before the Hyphy movement I used to dress preppy and I’m glad I broke free from that chain. Where ever I go I blast my Bay Area music and will always play Hyphy tracks till I go deaf or die. Lastly to the world, Hyphy has died shortly after Mac Dre was murdered. Mac Dre was killed in 2006 and 2 years later Hyphy died. The artists tried too hard and weren’t thinking about their roots. There are some other factors but that’s the main reason why the sound of Hyphy didn’t hook and sinker. Instead the string broke viciously and not many were able to catch the catchy music. To the people it has impacted like myself it hasn’t died because we carry the movement within still. Through what we wear how we dance and how we speak the masses can tell Hyphy is engraved in us like a bar code on a shopping good. Hyphy is a rap sound that is dynamic. Everything that came from the music made me who I am. I am proud to say I dance stupid and my diction is out of the norm. All thanks to the Hyphy Movement.
