Healthful Eating Bob Senn COM-250 April 5, 2007 Healthful Eating There are many different types of healthful eating and there are many different ways to remain healthy. By reading this one will understand how eating healthy will help him or her understand the meaning of healthful eating. Healthful eating is not just a word or idea, it is also a lifestyle. Did he or she know that people that eat healthy will live longer lives and keep a happier lifestyle' Healthful eating will help individuals live a better, longer, and healthier life because some people have high blood pressure and stress and unhealthy eating is the cause. Healthful eating is very important to help one’s family grow and remain healthy. When acquiring children, parents must always take their families health into consideration. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, “Families should build a healthy base. Setting up a food pyramid is helpful and let that pyramid guide your food choices” (USDA, 2008). Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables will help keep one’s metabolism up. “Healthful eating is important to you. After all, you want your family to have energy, be healthy, and stay well. You want you child to grow properly. Your control your families food choices more than you think” (USDA, 2008). Choosing sensible dinners with less salt will help decrease heart disease and potential for a stroke. One must examine the foods in his or her cabinets and refrigerator to make sure the safe foods are what he or she has. One must rid himself or herself of any foods who are unhealthy to present an acceptable example to his or her children. Aiming for a healthy weight and having a target weight to reach or maintain will give one the motivation needed to stay healthy. Working out by running, using treadmills, and lifting weights is helpful to keep one’s target heart rate and give oneself a better sense of well-being. “Be active: Walk the dog, don’t just watch the dog walk! Take a brisk family walk after supper” (USDA, 2008). The key to remaining healthy is keeping the physical activities going each day and not on certain days. Choosing the correct diet is very important in the maintaining process. Reading the nutrition facts is helpful for understanding if the contents of the product are what one is looking for. Fresh fruit, especially directly from its origin, is a good healthy type of food. Organic foods are also very healthy to have in every day eating. Avoiding foods such as processed lunch meats will help one move forward in the right direction. Another example of foods that are most often avoided is battered and deep fried foods. “Whole vegetables have lots of vitamins and minerals, so eat more green, orange and yellow vegetables. Steam them to retain the most nutritional value and be careful with sauces, they may be high in calories and fats that aren’t good for you” (Jegtvig, 2008). Eating pasta and bread with whole grain is very important. Sometimes the foods better for healthful eating are not always better for one’s pocket book. Each family’s personal finances are best taken into consideration when choosing the correct meals for the family meal plan. Healthful eating involves consistency and in doing so the rewards for the person or family will be astounding. “Assessing your lifestyle will require looking at your eating habits. If the foods you eat are not healthy, you might want to work within your habits and current lifestyle conditions, since they are usually tough to change” (Jegtvig, 2008). One good example of the consistency occurs when taking the family grocery shopping, one should first sit down and look at the recipes on the created meal plan and then use a shopping list to choose the groceries needed. One should always stick to the shopping list and not allow his or her cravings to help pick the food he or she wishes to consume. Protecting one’s heart is a key piece of healthy living. Every day people die because of unhealthy eating caused by heart disease. Recently there was a gentleman that was overweight and was 34. His weight had been causing him heart trouble and he let himself go and made it to the point in which no surgery could be administered to help him lower his weight. This man and his wife had tried for many years to have a baby but because of his and her weight, it was impossible. The couple had to use alternate pregnancy methods and they finally succeeded. The man’s wife had the baby about two months ago. One day on, their way home from town, the man had a massive heart attack and died instantly. This man died with a baby about a month old having to grow up without a father. The decisions that people make will affect our families so families should take that into consideration when choosing the foods they will eat. Lifestyles that reduce heart disease are a good start to leading a healthy lifestyle. “The women ate more fish oils, which helped to improve their ratio of unsaturated fats to the saturated and trans fats that can contribute to clogged arteries. In addition, they ate more fiber and more the B vitamin folate, found in foods like beans and green leafy vegetables” (White Productions, 2000). Taking less medication can also help keep one’s heart healthier. Healthful eating is important because it increases family stability over time. Healthful eating will also allow parents to live longer to see his or her children and grandchildren grow up. Making good decisions with healthful eating will help the family stay closer and better understand the positive and negative effects of it. Healthful eating will also give one a sense of better self worth and help one remain less conscious about one’s own weight. In eating healthful, one will also improve self confidence. Healthful eating will help spouses keep the attraction strong toward each other. Obesity and affects There are studies that obesity is very dangerous and that it is more common now among younger ages. Obesity comes from people that do not take the time to eat healthy. As a society, we have adapted to the fast food business and we rely on fast meals and whatever is available at the time. It is very easy for one to order a burger and some fries and go through a drive thru instead of taking the time to prepare a meal with fruits and vegetables in it. Furthermore, we should push for our government to continue to push healthy eating with the students throughout junior high and high school when the students start to make the decisions about snacking instead of eating a full, healthy meal. “Drug abuse, smoking, and disordered eating literature reveal that some health promoting messages can induce unintended or harmful effects on the target audience. Scholars recommend careful messaging in social marketing campaigns, by shifting the focus away from health outcomes.” (“Obesity & diabetes week,” 2010, p. 41). Obesity is more common now with the youth and is growing more each day. While walking around in a normal day one would now see a larger amount of obese individuals than 10 years ago. Our society has accepted it and every day people die because of his or her lack of taking the time to eat healthy. What can I lose' Let’s put this into perspective for a minute: what can I lose if I continue to eat unhealthy. How about the fact that I will no longer have a healthy heart and if I do not die or a heart attack I will likely need a transplant. How about the facts of the business world' If I am overweight and I am not able to move around very well, will I keep my job' Probably not; I will lose my job and then my family, and then I am alone. What could I have done different' I could have taken the time to eat healthier and I would have happiness. There are many reasons we should stay healthy and eat healthy. Good heart disease prevention measures are in place when one is eating healthy. Did the reader of this know that living and eating healthful will help keep a healthy heart' One can prevent high blood pressure through eating healthful and avoiding the stress that eating unhealthy puts on one’s body. Healthful eating will help individuals live a better, longer, and healthier life. If one will only live life day-by-day and eat healthful and take care of one’s self, he or she will live a prosperous life. We should always eat healthy, if for no one else, for us.
