The Evolution of the Health Care and Timeline Introduction The population is aging, life expectancy is on the rise, “the share of the total population aged 65 years and over in more developed regions is expected to grow from 14.3% in 2000 to 25.9% in 2050” (Hashimoto & Tabata, 2010, p1). As a person ages his or her mental and physical health tends to deteriorate, requiring an increase in health care. The increase in health care consists of nursing, and other social services. Modern medical care is compromised of newer and expensive technology, and hospitalizations. The elderly population is entitled to and expects access to health care equal to that of population under age 65. As the aged population increases so demands on the health care system increase. How the Growth and Aging population Change The Health Care Delivery Robin The United States has one of the largest and most expensive health care delivery systems in developed countries. The United States is working to improve their health care; the rise in the aging population is putting a burden on the health care system (Hashimoto & Tabata, 2010). An increase in the elderly population will cause a strain on our health care system, as the demand for health care services increases. The increase in health care demands results in a shift in labor from the non-health care sector to the health care sector (Hashimoto 2010). As the population over 65 increases, so do the number of chronic illnesses. “In the US, nearly three-quarters of Americans over the age of 65 suffer from chronic illnesses and half of them have more than one chronic illness” (Shortell & Stephens, p. 1, 2012) 75 percent of health care expenditures in the United States are the result of chronic illnesses. The increased need for health care is resulting in a need for larger numbers of health professionals. How Our Topic Changes The Quality of Care' Marcia The aging population will greatly impact the health care system in the United States (Center for Health Workforce Studies, 2006). It is reported that health care workers will decrease as a result of an aging population (Center for Health Workforce Studies, 2006). Whereas the workforce decreases the need of health care will increase because of an aging population (Center for Health Workforce Studies, 2006). As well as the aging population will directly contribute to the loss of a skilled workforce (Center for Health Workforce Studies, 2006). The National Center for Health Workforce Analysis of the Bureau of Health Professions in the Federal Health Resources and Services research found that the aging adults will become more educated and require different health care services than the younger generations previously required (Center for Health Workforce Studies, 2006). Additionally, the research revealed that the current health care workforces are not equipped nor trained to care for an aging population. It is reported in this research that the current health care workforces are without diversity (Center for Health Workforce Studies, 2006). It is reported by 2020 that $54 million baby boomers that require unique health care services (Center for Health Workforce Studies, 2006). Societal Beliefs and Values Gil The US individual beliefs and values are the aspects that affect the health care delivery. The individual beliefs and values may lead them to choose which care they want to receive or not to receive (Davidson, 2012). As the health care providers, ones may need to understand, and respect that situation when they perform the care of individuals. For example, some of the female or male patients prefer to choose the medical professionals of their genders to provide care services for them. That situation creates challenges to the medical professionals to increase the understanding not only on health challenges but also understanding patient beliefs and values. In addition, there some challenges such as an increase or growth of the aging population. This demographic change affects the US health care delivery. It is believed that as individuals grow older they tend to use more medical services such as drugs, hospital visits, and tests than younger population (Cassels, 2011). That situation increases the debate about the awareness of the aging population challenges. The debate concerns about the need of critical plans or measures to deal with the aging population health demands. These measures may be the ones that are not violating individual beliefs, and values, but helping to meet the aging population challenges. The US population and health care stakeholders such as hospitals, and other health care organizations may need to work in collaboration to understand the aging population challenges they face. How did this change affect the views of the team in regards to the delivery of health care' - Marcia Team B is disturbed by these findings because some of the team members will be affected by the health care provided to the future aging population. The team believes that the politicians in Washington, D.C. and state government will have to get involved to ensure that the aging population health care will not be negatively impacted. Most important, the team believes the best course of action will begin with training and educating the current health care workforce by providing quality of health care of the future aging population. The government should implement a reward system that may give a tax break or federal grants for health care professionals that employ diverse workforce. By hiring a diversified workforce is one of those changes necessary to prepare to care for the aging populations or the Baby Boomers (Center for Health Workforce Studies, 2006). Create a timeline that identifies when your chosen subject affected the health care industry, and include identification of any other events or effects that were direct results of this time in health care evolution.
