Identifies educational needs For my Friedman family assessment I interviewed a single father and his two children whose mother had died several years earlier. The family appears is still having a difficult time dealing with the death of their mother and wife. K.W. Sr. states he feels the stress of raising two children alone and still wakes up crying in the middle of the night. His daughter is missing the mother daughter time shared, and his son never even speaks of his mother, he appears to have totally shut down. I believe the family could use some counseling to help them deal with their loss. K.W. also appears to have problems planning his meals. He is still a very large man even though he has recently lost 75 pounds. He makes sure his children eat three meals a day but he skips the most important meal of the day breakfast. He does not seem to utilize the basic food groups but feeds his children mostly fries foods and sweets. He has a large amount of processed foods in the home but little fruits and vegetables. The family could use education in the nutrition department. Communication is the key to building a healthy relationship. K.W and his son loves football and basket ball and have formed that father son bond, but his communication with his daughter appears to have stalled. K.W. believes his 15-year-old daughter does not respect his authority as her father and is rushing life. He believes she is still too young to stay out past 10 o’clock, wear makeup or date and wants her to concentrate more on her future education. His daughter believes her father’s mind is closed to all of her suggestions. She does not believes she can talk to him because he does not listen to what she has to say. She said if it were not for her grandmother she would have no one to talk with. I believe the family needs education on healthier ways to communicate with each other. Establishes educational goals and objectives When dealing with a family that is cannot cope with the death of a family member effectively; the nurse must recognize the family’s strengths by observing the way the family is dealing with the loss. Then nurse will need to be supportive, understand the family’s values, recognize their grief, and help them through the grieving process. By showing empathy, providing them with information and expressing his or her concerns the nurse will be able to identify the family members individual strengths and provide additional support. It is the goal of the nurse to promote healthy living and lifestyles in his or her clients. We must educate him or her on the importance of a well balanced diet. The nurse can teach K.W healthier food choices, alternatives to fried foods and more nutritional desserts for the children. She must encourage him to continue his exercise regime and can also show him different ways he can do to increase his heart rate when he cannot go to the gym. The nurse can recommend the family speak with a nutritionist or certified dietician that can help him plan weekly menus for him and the family. K.W. also can be referred to a wellness center. This in return will help K.W develop the knowledge needed to promote and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Good communicate within a family builds respect and support and without these two elements the family process is been broken. It appears K.W. and his daughter to have lost his ability to communicate with each other. To regain those communication skills hen or she must be willing to discuss the situation openly and honestly. He must be able to share personal or private details from his past, which may help another family member deal with his or her issues. Any problems that affect the family should be solved by the family. Family members should remain flexible and supportive of each personal growth. Family members will need to recognize each other’s need to experience life and grow independently. Selects appropriate educational methods Interpersonal therapy is a common method used to help individuals who maybe having a particularly hard time dealing with the death of a loved one. This type of therapy will help the individual through the grief stages while helping him or her take a look at the relationship he or she had with the deceased. The added cognitive-behavioral component will help the individual confront the loss and find ways to deal with life after a loss. One of the resources available to educate the community about lifestyles is the wellness clinics. These are clinic that promote healthy living by educating each individual on his or her dietary needs, proper nutrition, and fitness, and also provides some direct medical practices such as gastric banding and bypass surgeries for the extremely obese. They have trained therapist to provide exercise tips, license dieticians and nutritionist to help the client develop a diet plan to help in his or her weight loss journey. Effective parent education programs are one option that is available to help the family with his or her inability to communication. This specific program is performed in the home, as a group, as a community service. When dealing with older children the teen are involved in the programs. The parent and child are involved in interactive approaches such as role-playing. This type of play will help the parent and child develop better communication skills while rebuilding his or her trust and respect for each other. Outlines the steps to implement the educational plan To implement the educational plan, you must create a list of steps. These steps must include steps for preparation, action, and evaluation. To meet the goals he or must identify the partners, the resources, and develop intervention messages and activities. Ones action plan should include setting up guidelines and list the responsibilities of each partner. Schedule monthly meetings and reassess his or her goals and objectives of each intervention. Last is the evaluation or reflection step. In this stage you can strengthen and build new partnerships. You are accountable for keeping track of your resources and additional cost and report them to your partners. It very important to involve others, make appropriate changes when needed and find creative and exciting ways to improve your method of delivering the information. The Educational Process When evaluating the educational process of community health nursing, we must first establish, which community health interventions are needed to educate the client adequately. Then we will need to measure the effectiveness of each intervention and which family member will benefit from which intervention. Through process evaluation the nurse will be able to understand the successes and failures of the interventions. It also plays an important role in improving the specific theories in which each intervention is formed . References Action Steps to Create and Implement Group Education Sessions ( n.d.)
