List these below using their full title (you should include at least 6 in your answer). (O1.1) Moving and handling Fire and damage at the clients home. Accidents, injuries and illness COSHH Infection control Read your organisations Health & Safety policy and procedure and describe the main points below. (01.2) The main points in my companies health and safety policy are : * A safe and healthy working environment and a safe system of work. * Safe equipment – always make sure that the equipment is good working order. * Adequate information, instruction, training and supervision – always make sure training is up to date and do spot checks on all staff. * Facilities for the treatment of any injuries that occur at work – first aid kits available upon request, accident book for recording injuries and accidents. Explain the responsibilities of the following in relation to the legislation you have researched and your workplace policy: * Yourself * Your employer or manager * Others within the work setting. (01.3) YOURSELF: Reasonable care of health and safety of myself and others who may be affected. To understand and comply with requirements of risk assessments associated. Not intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health and safety. Work in a safe and proper manner in accordance with policies outlined by the company. EMPLOYER: Ensure members of staff are aware of health and safety policy,organisation responsibilities, arrangements. Ensure the policies are reviewed and updated annually to the effectiveness of policy and ensure any necessary changes are made. Ensure effective policy for health and safety. Periodically review the organisation, responsibilities and arrangements. Create and maintain safe and healthy working environment. OTHERS: Clients will be informed of their responsibilities using equipment in a safe manner. Inform them of risk assessments which affect them. Informed how to report health and safety issues. Company will carry out training to appropriate levels in order to ensure conversant with matters concerning health a d safety. Consult with employees and where appropriate clients on matters of health and safety. Will seek advice and help on health and safety matters from relevant sources. In your workplace what tasks relating to Health & Safety must not be carried out by anyone without special training' List these below and discuss reasons for this. (01.4) Manual handling- Need to learn to lift and roll correctly. Fire safety- How to deal with fires or how to avoid fires from starting. Food safety- How to prepare yourself and food before giving to client Should you need additional support and information on health & safety issues explain how you would go about this, who would you speak too and reasons for doing so. (01.5) I would go to my health and safety advisor if they couldn't help, i would look up united kingdom home care association or health and safety executive guidance as well as searching on the internet or libraries. Outcome 2 Find out about Risk Assessments in relation to Health & Safety and explain why is it important to carry out risk assessments within the environment you work in. (02.1) Risk assessments are carried out to identify risks and hazards and how to assess effectively to reduce the risks of injuries. These should be reviewed either 6 monthly or annually unless something occurs and then you have to review as soon as occurred. Explain your organisations procedure for reporting risks that have been identified, and actions which may be taken. (02.2) You would record on a risk assessment form in reference to standard checklists and HSE guidance to help ensure all hazards are identified. Think about a dilemma you have encountered between an individual’s rights and a health & safety concern. Can you reflect on this and describe this below and explain how this has been resolved. (02.3) I have a client who refused to be hoisted back to bed at lunchtimes even though the DN had stated it was for their benefit, i contacted my area manager for confirmation that the client needed to go back to bed and after a brief conversation with the client they agreed that they would go back to bed as it was for their health. Outcome 3 List the different types of accidents and sudden illness that can occur within your work setting and clearly explain these. (O3.1) Stroke Sickness Chemical burns Fractures Dislocations Heart attacks Explain your organisations procedure to follow in the event of an accident or sudden illness occurring or reflect on an emergency dealt with and the outcomes of this. (03.2) I would contact an ambulance. Once they have been contacted will contact area manager. Full details of accident will be recorded in accident records as soon as possible after the event has happened. All accidents need to be fully documented in accordance with legislative requirements. Outcome 4 These outcomes will be observed by your assessor who will watch you carrying out your usual work activities (04.1, 04.2) Outcome 5 List legislation which are all specific relate to moving and handling. (05.1) Moving and handling Accidets injuries and illness. Explain in your own words how you would move and handle equipment and other objects safely remember training taken (O5.2) Assess the activity, check for other hazards, use hoists lifting aids where applicable, ensure load was light enough to lift,make sure there is somewhere to put load when you have moved it, stand close to the load, spread feet shoulder width apart bend knees and keep back straight. Your assessor will watch you carrying out your usual work activities for this outcome (05.3) Outcome 6 List the various hazardous substances and materials that can be found within your work setting and the community in which you work. (O6.1) Chemicals i.e. Bleech, cleaning fluids. Medication in wrong hands. Describe the safe practices for the following in the community and other care homes: * Storing hazardous substances * Using hazardous substances * Your organisational procedure for disposing of hazardous substances and materials. (O6.2) Storing- Store safely in cupboards, or put out of reach of wrong hands. Using- Use chemicals sparingly ensure get rid of all chemical residue correctly. Disposing-Dispose of all medication by taking to a pharmacy NEVER throw away down the sink or in a bin. Throw away empty chemical bottles correctly and ensure that any chemical fluid is flushed down the sink or drain with water. Outcome 7 Explain the practices that prevent fires within the community from: * Starting * Spreading (O7.1) Starting- Any combustible items disposed of correctly. Plug sockets turned off when not in use. If smokers ensure that cigarettes are put out correctly. Portable heaters to be moved away from furniture. Ensure that any glass/mirrors are out of direct sunlight due to the heat and staring fires. Spreading - Ensure doors are firmly shut, papers are to be tided away, comply to all regulations ensuring electrics are safe to use. Explain your organisations fire procedure and actions you would need to take in the community and office .(O7.2) Discovering a fire ensure the client can be safely removed from immediate vicinity. Care worker to call the fire brigade on 999, if fire is small and only if safe to do so tackle the fire. BUT never put yourself at risk. Report such incidents to managers all records of fires must be recorded in clients notes and kept on file. Explain why is it important to maintain a clear evacuation route at all times (O7.3) It is important so that their is a safe route incase of a fire. Always have an escape route in the back of your mind and ensure its clear to make sure no trip hazards on exit. Outcome 8 These outcomes will be observed by your assessor who will watch you carrying out your usual work activities (08.1, 08.2) Explain why it is important that others are aware of your whereabouts when you are in your work setting (O8.3) It is important for others to know incase of accidents, fires, if you become trapped and can not escape they can tell the fire brigade who can then come to your aid. Outcome 9 List the signs that could indicate you are stressed (O9.1) Fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, tension pains, anxiety, sadness, depression, restlessness, lack of motivation, irritability, anger, social withdrawal, over or under eating and angry outbursts. Give 3 circumstances which can trigger stress within you – explain how you manage these instances (09.2, O9.3) Could have problems at home, work, being in debt. Manage these by relaxation techniques, breathing slowly, organise time don't take on more than you can handle. Physical activity like going for walks or gym work is another way to relieve stress.
