Plot Summary
Harry leaves the Dursleys after getting angry with his aunt and she inflates and blows away. He is picked up by The Knight Bus and arrives at The Leaky Cauldron. There, he meets Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic. Harry learns about Sirius Black, who escaped from Azkaban, a wizarding prison who killed 13 people. Harry meets his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger and Hermione buys a cat who always chases Ron’s rate, Scabbers who is getting old. Harry finds out he could be a target of Sirius Black. On the trip to Hogwarts Harry loses conciousness from Dementors and is saved by Professor Lupin. At school Draco Malfoy gets attacked by Buckbeak (the Hippogriff). During Quidditch Harry gets attacked by a dementor. Harry asks Lupin to teach him a Patronus Charm, a shield and guardian against the Dementors and he agrees. Sirius Black breaks into the castle. Fred and George Weasley show Harry a secret passageway to Hogsmeade because he is not allowed to go. Harry overhears that Black was a great friend of the Potters and Harry's godfather, but betrayed them to Lord Voldemort, and murdered their friend Peter Pettigrew. Ron is attacked by a dog and dragged into a passage beneath the Whomping Willow (a tree). Harry and Hermione follow him in and come into a building called the Shrieking Shack. They discover that the dog is Sirius Black. Harry tries to kill Sirius before Lupin arrives. Lupin admits he’s a werewolf and that Sirius and Pettigrew were friends with James Potter. Sirius was supposed to protect the Potters but secretly switched this duty to Pettigrew. Sirius did not kill Peter, but escaped by blasting the street and turning into a rat, and they force Scabbers (Ron’s rat) to reveal his true identity. Ron’s rat was Peter. Harry stops Black and Lupin from killing Pettigrew and they return to the castle. Full moon comes and Lupin turns into a werewolf. Pettigrew escapes and Harry and Sirius are surrounded by Dementors who try to start to take Harry’s soul, they are saved at the last minute by a Patronus sent by someone who Harry believes to be his father. Harry finds out that Black is about to lose his soul even though Dumbledore, the headmaster believes that Peter is the guilty one. Hermione uses her time turner to take Harry back in time with her Harry and Hermione rescue Buckbeak and re-watch the scenes of the night, until they see the Dementors cornering Harry and Sirius. Harry is waits to see who sent the Patronus, only to realize that he was the one who sent it. He casts a powerful Patronus which saves his past self and Sirius. Sirius is rescued and flys on Buckbeak. Snape is angry over Black's escape and is convinced that Harry, Ron and Hermione were involved, but is completely unable to prove it as neither of them appear to have escaped from the Hospital Wing ever since they came. Lupin resigns the next day. On the way back from the school, Harry gets a letter from Sirius saying that he is successfully in "hiding".
Significance of the Title
The title of the book is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The Significance of the title of the book is really obvious. The Prisoner of Azkaban is central to the plot because it refers to Sirius Black, Harry’s Godfather. Everyone in the book believed him to have killed 13 people but in reality it was really Peter Pettigrew who did that. Sirus Black is also an Animagus which means he can turn into a dog at will. Also Harry Potter refers to the main character. Anyway back to Sirius, everyone thought he was out to get at Harry but really he just wanted revenge on Peter Pettrigrew who was an Animagus too who was Ron’s pet rat. Sirius Black was also Harry’s Dad’s best friend. Finally if it wasn’t for Sirius the book would be kinda useless. That is the significance of the title.
Setting and Genre
The setting of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is very interesting. It is set in the present day circa 1994. The place it is set in is mostly Hogwarts. But it features cameos of London, a fictional suburb, a fictional village and the countryside.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban has a few genres. One is coming of age because Harry is 13 and will be an adult before he know it. Another genre is fantasy because in the real world we can’t make things move with our minds. Not yet anyway. And the last genre is mystery because throughout the book Harry is trying to find Sirius Black. He is trying to find him because he killed his parents. And so he wants to kill him. Those are the setting and the genres.
Ideas about the Main Characters
My ideas about the characters are that they are fairly believable and well written. The reason they are believable is because they are British. American teens are not nearly that behaved. I think that Harry is smart and cool but he is kind of stupid at a lot of times. Hermione is kind of clichéd because she is the girl and the smart one. I also hate that Ron is really mean to Hermione the whole book even when she proves that her cat didn’t eat his rat. All of the characters are worthy of praise because they are all believable and well written. The only thing I didn’t like is if they were going to kill the hippogriff they should have just set him free even if Hagrid would get fired because Hagrid epically fails as a teacher. And when Harry is taunted by Draco Malfoy the fact that he doesn’t do anything about is dumb because its shows he is a total wus. The only normal thing that happens in the book is when Hermione punches Draco Malfoy in the mouth. I assume in Britain they are generally nicer. Also I don’t like that Hermione had to be dumb and sellout Harry’s new broom the Firebolt because it is awesome and even if he did die it would be worth it to just ride on it. Its like the equivalent of a Wii in 2007 or a Dsi or Fallout: New Vegas. Also I like Ron because he is funny but he kind of sucks at magic and so does Harry until they get Professor Lupin. Because on his British Finals he gets full marks on a lab (its called a practical exam there).
Changes in the Main Characters
The incident that cause a major change in the characters was the realization that Sirus Black wasn’t actually a murder and he didn’t kill Harry’s parents. Throughout the whole book Harry had been set on killing him because he thought Sirius had been Secret Keeper but he really wasn’t. This brought a change in Ron and Hermione because Ron had been mad at Hermione for her cat always chasing his rat. But then they found out that the rat was actually a person. So Ron stopped being a jerk about it. Ron had previously thought that Crookshanks (the cat) had eaten Scabbers (the rat) but actually didn’t. The term Secret Keeper refers to a charm (or spell) in the book that was placed on the Potter house to prevent Voldemort (or he-who-must-not-be-named) from killing the Potters. The charm would be placed and to whoever the Secret Keeper tells where they are living would they be able to find them. Originally Sirius Black was supposed to be the Secret Keeper but with the war Sirius suspected Remus Luping was the spy and made Peter Pettigrew Secret Keeper. Turns out Pettigrew was the spy and sold out James and Lily Potter. So Voldemort came and killed Lily and James but because of Lily he was unable to kill Harry. Voldemort did this because of a prohecy Trelawney made saying that Harry or Neville would hav the power to defeat him. So naturally Voldemort came after him. After Harry, Ron and Hermione learned all of this they stopped trying to kill Sirus Black. Harry even wanted to go live with him because he hated his Aunt and Uncle so much.
In conclusion the realization that Sirius Black didn’t kill Harry’s parents brought a great change in the main characters.

Sentence from the Text
A sentence that embodies the theme of the story is ‘The consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the futures is a very difficult business indeed.’ It embodies the story because the whole theme of Harry Potter the series as a whole is choices. Plus if Harry didn’t save Peter Pettigrew then the prophecy Professor Trelawney had made earlier wouldn’t have made sense.
Marauder’s Map
Controversial Issue from the Text
A controversial issue from the textt is Remus Lupin not telling Dumbledore about Sirius Black being an Animagus and leading others to become Animgi (and yes that is the right spelling J. K. Rowling said so). I agree with Remus because if I was discriminated against so much that I couldn’t get a job I probably wouldn’t be able to tell someone who actually trusts me something that might make me lose their trust. Plus he had himself totally convinced that Sirius Black was getting in using dark magic that he probably wouldn’t be using his Animagus form. Since him being the dog would be a dead giveaway I have to empathize with Remus for assuming that. This would have probably gotten him fired. And Harry gave him no clues as to a black dog wandering around Hogwarts. Plus Dumbledore let him in Hogwarts as a boy while no other Headmaster would have done so.
Also he led Peter Pettigrew, James Potter, and Sirius Black to become Animagi. To him he finally had friends that were willing to do stuff for him so he was probably happy for awhile. And since he was real young and thoughtless (he was like 15 or 16) he didn’t give much thought to other people’s safety. He even said there were near misses. But now, about 20 or so years later he regrets his choices a lot
In conclusion I agree with this issue from the text. I believe he shouldn’t be thought down of because of the choices he made because he didn’t want to lose Dumbledore’s trust which has meant everything to him.

General Review
I actually liked the book. And I would recommend it just about anyone that likes fantasy and is around my age because it’s a good read. I probably wouldn’t have changed too many elements of the story. I like the plot because it is pretty interesting and there are no uber huge plot holes. I also like the characters and would not change them in the least. Except make Hermione a little less PMS. She gives girls a bad name. I like the setting there’s not much to change about that and the resolution is almost fulfilling. The only thing that sucked about the resolution is Peter escaped but if he didn’t the series would just probably end there. The conflicts are interesting and fanfiction about Sirius just meeting Harry in the beginning is better left unread and unwritten because it sucks. I wish Professor Lupin could get a point of view because he is freaking awesome but that would mess up the whole series because its all in 3rd person. So it would be really random to just put him in 1st person. I also wish we could have seen more interaction with Lupin and Harry because they have great chemistry and not in the romance way if there is one. Rowling should have shown more of what goes on in the Dementor lessons. Also she should have included more types of spells and the murky past of the marauders.
In conclusion I really like the book and would recommend it to most people interesting in that type of genre. Also I think Remus J. Lupin should have had a way bigger part in the novel because he is a static character and yet awesome at the same time. He is way better than Atticus Finch because he is a werewolf so he eats people. And that is so much cooler than being a lawyer. Finally he likes chocolate which is the most amazing food in the world.
Scene Rewrite
I stared at Harry from the empty stands. It was pounding rain and my fur was beginning to freeze. Not many people were watching Quidditch and it wasn’t hard to see why. The storm was darker than night and the wind was as fierce as the devil himself. Harry’s broom spun sideways as I watched. God, he looked just like Harry. Almost the same as when I had lost saw him. The day his parents died. It still hurts to think about that. Lighting sprang from the sky. It was getting dangerous to be out here and I hoped Harry would soon catch the Snitch. Then I saw them. The Dementors. They glided down into the stands and I ran. The last glimpse of Harry I saw was him falling from his broom, 200 feet in the air.
Scene: Chapter 9 Grim Defeat in the PoV of Sirius Black as he watches the Quidditch (wizard sport) game.

Harry is the best student I ever had. Not nobody could ride Buckbeak like he could.
Harry is the most despicable student ever. He couldn’t even make a shrinking solution. I swear they get dumber each year
Harry was a charm to work with. He will go far.
Harry saw the grim he is to die soon. I’ve seen it in my crystal ball.
If only Harry would work harder he could achieve more.
