When someone is in love, one would like to be loved back. If that doesn’t seem to happen, some people become obsessed or even crazy over the other significant person. As it was for Hamlet and Ophilia, in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Prince Hamlet is a strong, smart young man, who has gazed his eyes upon a preety young woman, named Ophilia. But to his young happy heart, his love was not corresponded upon. Causing great confusion and madness to poor Prince Hamlet.
Ophelia’s family did not agree with the amorous relationship that was growing between Prince Hamlet and herself. Ophelia’s brother Laertes gives her advice about Hamlet and how his “affection” for her is only a game to him. He warns her to stay away from him and to not to pay too much attention to him. “For Hamlet and the trifling of his favor, Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, A violet in the youth of primy nature, Forward, not permanent, sweet, not lasting, The perfume and suppliance of a minute. No more.” (Shakespeare, 39). But not only just her brother warns and prohibits her from sir Hamlet, but her father as well. After Laertes finishes talking to her and his father and leaves to England, Polonius was trying to investigating what Laertes told her. Ophelia told her dad about how Hamlet was sending her letters and he keeps looking for her. Polonius tells her daughter that it is best that she stays away from him and to not receive none of his letters or to see him anymore. And to stop being nieve, so that she doesn’t embarrass him. “Marry, I’ll teach you. Think yourself a baby that you have ta'en these tenders for true pay, which are not sterling. Tender yourself more dearly” (47).
But Ophelia also liked Hamlet as much as he did to her. But Ophelia agreed to her brother and father that she will not accept any letters or see him alone.
But more in the story Prince Hamlet comes to Ophelia acting as if he were crazy. Ophelia was by herself in a room. When Hamlet went up to her with his clothes hanging out and his pants in and out of his boots. He looked at her, mainly staring at her and smelled her very strangly and just left. Ophelia was scared and ended up telling the king and queen of what has happened. But that was just a little play so that everyone can think that Hamlet was really going crazy. The king and queen believed that the reason for Hamlet’s craziness is due to the rejection of Ophelia. Therefore, the king and queen decided to make Ophelia talk to Hamlet alone corresponding to his love letters. In hope of him getting better from his madness. So when Ophelia and Hamlet were alone she told him that she has been wanting to give him letters from her in responds to his letters. But Hamlet denies that he has ever wrote to her and he never liked her.” You should not have believed me, for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it. I loved you not” (131). To a disturbing twist after Hamlet left to England and killed Ophelia’s father, Ophelia has lost her mind and became crazy. And when Hamlet returned back from England, he found out that Ophelia has drowned herself to death. Waiting for his return and in hopes that he would say that he loved her. A gravedigger was digging the grave for Ophelia but Hamlet didn’t know that at the time. And after a few minutes he began to see people mourning, in front of the line was the king, his mother, and Laertes. So Hamlet and Horatio stood aside and hid to see who was the dead person that they were mourning for. “Here comes the king, The queen, the courtiers—who is this they follow, And with such maimèd rites' This doth betoken the corse they follow did with desperate hand fordo its own life. 'Twas of some estate. Couch we a while and mark” (251).
And when he saw that it was Ophelia that has died, he joined the mourning people to see her up close. And there he confessed to everyone that he always loved her and that not even hundreds, thousands, of her brothers could stoped him from loving her. “I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up the sum. What wilt thou do for her'” (225).
