haleHAMLET ESSAY...:) “I his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven” Hamlets duplicity counteracts his indecisiveness with his melancholy; highlighting his inability to act. Throughout the revenge tragedy Hamlet is confronted with 3 key motives to inspire him to revenge! The failure to respond to these motives out’s Hamlets paradigm as prominently indecisive; opposed to justified. Shakespeare illustrates this increasing negative paradigm shift through the continuous struggle of Hamlets insanity and psychological state as he delves deeper into his own madness and resentment. Hamlet is presented with pure motives, yet his melancholy establishes his compulsion to doubt, revealing his prevalent indecisiveness. His relationship with his mother demonstrates how he is anguished over his obligations to his father but repressed by the loyalty to his mother. Lastly, Hamlet’s internal turmoil reflects his indecision to act, his personal battle over the morality of the situation, and the desire to commit suicide. “To be or not to be” Dynamically it is his melancholy that promptly distinguishes his procrastination and ultimately leads to his downfall. Hamlets doubt reveals his indecisiveness and inability to act. A prominent Elizabethan age ideal, Shakespeare employs” intellectual doubt” to reveal the over-analytical ,and obsessive thinker paradigm of Hamlet. Shakespeare heightens this theme of doubt with the motif of” uncertainty” and watching, established in the opening of the play. The watchmen cry “Nay, answer me, stand and unfold thyself” and the proposed supernatural element of the ghost constructs a mood of suspicion and uncertainty. At the time of writing, a ghost was of the foreshadowing of bad events, or could even represent the devil. The use of war imagery, “fair and war like form” and “this bodes some strange eruption to the state” alludes to a country on the brick of war, a mix of uncertainty of the events ahead. When the ghost appears in his fathers form, it instigates a motive for revenge. “Take revenge for his horrible murder, that crime against nature” At first it appears Hamlet in enraged with fury. The emotive language “villain, villain, smiling, damned villain!” marks the beginning of Hamlets madness. However as the play progresses it becomes clear that he doubt runs subconsciously parallel as he begins to question the form of the ghost.”May be the devil, and the devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape, out of my weaknesses and melancholy. Consistently fueled by his doubt Hamlet sets out to “catch the conscience of the king”. At the climax of the “play with a play” Claudius abruptly cries “Get me out of here!” and allows Hamlet doubt to be reaffirmed- he now has proof. Yet although Hamlet has been presented with two motives, he continues to ponder the situation, highlighting his indecisiveness. The metaphor “Seems mother, Nay it is, I know not seem!” suggests that what people say is different to how they behave. This aspect is infixed with his relationship with Ophelia in which he doubts her sincerity towards him. Her treats Ophelia cruelly and often makes rude sexual connections such as “Lady shall I lie in your lap” This doubt he has towards her, constituently makes Hamlet indecisiveness about there relationship. He calls her a whore and pushes her away, yet when she dies Hamlet jumps into her grave and shouts “I loved Ophelia!” Lastly, when Hamlet has a final opportunity to kill Claudius, he is presented with a dramatic moment of indecision and doubt. If he kills Claudius- what will the consequences of his acts be' Hamlets relationship with his mother highlights how his devotion to her weighs up his indecisiveness. His loyalty to his mother is illustrated in the early scenes when he reveals “I shall do my best to obey you madam”. Hamlet is torn between the obligations to avenge his father, and salvage his mother’s honor. Shakespeare cleverly demonstrates how Gertrude is the primarily focus of Hamlet’s paradigm. Basically Hamlet focuses his entire self around Gertrude; his circumstances were depended on her, his decisions based around her. In contrast if he was self-centered, his relationship with his mother would have no affect on his inability to act, rather it would be based around his own circumstances. This intense relationship cannot be ignored as it is central to Hamlet. For example, the incestuous and sexual imagery “May, but to live in the rank sweat of an enseamed bed, stewing in corrupted honey and making lover oh they nasty sly” highlights how deeply and abnormally Hamlet focused on his mothers sexual encounters. He even goes so far to encourage her to renounce her Marriage to Claudius. She of course, will not do this. Her infidelity and remarriage appear to be the key ingredient for his melancholy. For instance the emotive language “The funeral baked meats did costly furnish forth the marriage tables” and the pun “I am too much in the sun” sun referring to “son” emphasis a primary focus on Gertrude’s betrayal, rather that that of his father’s death. Furthermore, he is so enraged with is mother that he irrational killed Polonius. This act contrasts against hamlet’s previous chances to kill Claudius. It was not thought out. Rather Hamlet evidently shapes his actions around Gertrude. He acts are not justified, rather indecisive impulses. Hamlets uncertainty of himself is a prominent force of his indecisiveness. It demonstrates how his grief and melancholy become a significant burden. The monologue “To be or not to be” he goes back and forth, contemplating the action of suicide. He is so burden by grief and ideas about mortality that he hesitant about everything. Whether it is truly an “act of madness” it constructs a set of differences between Hamlet and Claudius. Claudius becomes a man of action, unlined with unrighteous virtues, a prominent contrast with Hamlet who places an ingrained importance on morality. He ponders whether if an individual takes on a moral path but not acting, it is indeed itself immortal. He wonders if he will be sent to hell if he murders Claudius. Throughout the play he bemoans his lack of action. “Like John-a-dreams, unpregnant of my cause, and can say nothing” In the words of bloom “We go back to Hamlet because we cannot achieve enough consciousness, even at the expense of a sickening self-consciousness” In conclusion, is it evident that Hamlet pure motives, yet his doubts, uncertainty of himself and his relationship with his mother caused his indecisiveness and his inability to act. Hamlet becomes obsessed with the act itself. His indecisiveness, and inability to act causes Hamlet central paradigm to act irrational, and caused a fast chain reaction after Polonius’s murder, and ultimately led to his downfall.
