Morning/Afternoon Mr Ryan and fellow class mates
Judith Beveridge has an unquestionable love for nature which she developed throughout her childhood. Beveridge was born in England 1956 and came at to Australia 1960 at the young age of 3. Beveridge grew up in the western Sydney area and on school holidays she spent majority of her time on her uncle’s farm.
The statement “Judith Beveridge’s poetry is confrontational, charged and unrelenting” couldn’t be truer. Throughout the five poems written by Judith Beveridge we have studied Judith uses several different language techniques. Judith Beveridge’s confrontation and unrelenting poetry is clearest throughout her poems of “The Two Brothers” and “The Domesticity of Giraffes”. These two poems both have strong aspects of nature.
The poem of the two brothers identifies the childish decisions made by children. The poem is about a young girl who is somewhat being bullied by these two brothers. You might find that Beveridge really goes over the top when describing the two brothers as possible future criminals. Beveridge uses techniques like Onomatopoeia and Alliteration to make her poetry confrontation, charged and so unrelenting.
Alliteration is a commonly used technique throughout the two brothers. Some examples include, “paint pictures”, “sparrows slowly”, “never needed” and “two touching”. The term paints pictures is used in a stanza where Judith seems to yet again daydream away from the current confronting present of the two brothers. She starts to daydream about the snails having the ability to paint picture book with their trails. The effect of sparrows slowly implies to the deaths. Beveridge relates the sparrows to herself, slowly dying. The brothers are slowly torturing her with cruel and confronting acts. With Beveridge having such strong feelings towards nature this is becoming unbearable.
Onomatopoeia is used well to continually carry on the sense of torture towards Beveridge and to show the childishness of the two brothers. “tucked”, ”cobble”, ”clenched”, ”bitterness” and “shook” are all examples of Onomatopoeia. The term tucked is used just after the brother showed themselves to the girl. All these examples are used when the brothers are torturing the little girl. The term clenched is used well to clearly show the girls strong love for nature. The term is used when the boys are torturing defensive animals and the little girl clenches her fist to her mouth as a way to release pain from what she is seeing.
Beveridge uses these 2 language techniques and many others for example Tone and Imagery to create a picture of how different the two genders are. Beveridge creates the sense of the male gender being extremely aggressive and dominates but the female gentle and reserved.
The theme of Nature is a recurring feature to the five poems studied of Beveridge’s. The Domesticity of Giraffes is the perfect example of Beveridge’s confronting and unrelenting poetry. Beveridge’s writes with several language techniques such as personification to paint the image of pain and captivity.
The use of personification is clearest in the third stanza. “A wire cripple”, “stained underwear” and “Miss Marigold”. The technique of personification is used perfectly by Beveridge to create this feel of entrapment for the giraffe, especially with the quote “wire cripple”. This here clearly drills in the lack of freedom and the used of the word cripple create the feel of giving up.
Similes are a frequently used technique which works so well in creating Beveridge’s desired theme. A simile is the first language technique used by Beveridge. Some of these include “legs stark as telegraph poles”, “like the neck of a dying bird”, “like pink gladiolus” and finally “like a black leather strap”. This black leather strap term is used in the second line of Beveridge’s poem. Black leather strap engages the audience from the get go and creates the sense of punishment. Like the Giraffe is being whipped if fighting for freedom.
The poem “The Domesticity of Giraffes” can be interrupted in many ways. Is Beveridge just showing her strong love for animals and freedom or is she implying that she is living her life entrapped by her husband. You can see aspects of Beveridge having an extremely strong disliking being a housewife and feeling she isn’t reaching her full potential.
Judith Beveridge’s poetry is confrontational, charged and unrelenting can be found in many texts written by Beveridge but the two text Domesticity of Giraffes and the Two Brothers are relevant to everyday issues such as entrapment and bullying. Through Beveridge’s unrelenting poetry your view of life transforms.
Thankyou
