Ismael Ramirez Jr. August 21, 2012 5th Period Fast Food Nation In the modern life of America there are many health issues, but one of the main issues is diabetes. There are two main possible reasons for this, one is either getting it from a family member when you are born which is called hereditary, and the other main reason that has made the United States to be the most obese country in the world is called fast food businesses. Fast food has been around since the beginning of the 1900’s and will probably continue to be around for another one hundred years unless, we stop giving into the fast food restaurants that will continue to hurt the health of many Americans. Well, in the book “Fast Food Nation” by Eric Schlosser, he talks about how the fast food industry has escalated obesity, and change the way people eat today. As the story begins, the author tells the name of Carl N. Karcher. Karcher was one of the first people to start a fast food business. He was a high school dropout that began to work on farms in the city of Anaheim, California. Karcher was a typical farmer who would take care of regular farm animals such as horses and cows. Soon after living in California for a while Karcher moved back to Ohio and opened a hot dog stand with his wife. Business was booming because later on Karcher was able to afford four hot dog stands and owning a barbeque restaurant. Knowing that Karcher could own so many stands in such as short period of time makes me realize that many other restaurants will follow in his foot steps and soon open their own line of fast food restaurants. Also, what I believe that truly made Karcher’s businesses earn so much money was the fact that it was during the time of World War 2 and people at that time were probably starving because of most of the United States’ food was being sent to the soldiers also the fact that Karcher’s restaurants were fast food the prices were usually low so people could afford to eat there. Not only was Karcher a famous fast food salesman at the time but another name that we know today that sells worldwide is McDonald’s. McDonalds was founded by two brothers whose last name were McDonald worked together to establish the fast food company that we Americans love today. Not only did McDonalds help introduce tasty cheap burgers but also, the method most fast food companies use today is the assembly line. Schlosser soon talks about the similarities between the Disney and McDonalds corporations. He tells us how both McDonalds and Disney used children’s as their main victims to bring to their places to sell each of their own products. I do not think that was right for them to do because they were pretty much manipulating the minds of children . But, since both corporations were smart marketers they started to work together. It was not only the children who were wanting to go to eat fast food but also teenagers. Teenagers are the ones who are looking for jobs and fast food corporations love to hire unskilled workers and pay them low wages for very short working hours. I mean, sure go ahead and open fast food restaurants because it offers jobs for people who are looking to work but what people do not understand is that they are hurting themselves for eating too much fast food. Another point in the fast food business that is not right is that managers and other high position workers pays have increased while employees pays have decreased. The author gives the reader a tone that the employees work hard for low wages and are treated terribly for no reason.
