City and Guilds 7303 PTLLS HEATHER GAMBLE-SMITH THEORY TASK 4 Analyse different ways in which you would establish ground rules with your learners, which underpin behaviour and respect for others. Everyone is different when it comes to respect for others and levels of behaviour and these challenges will be brought into the classroom. Tutor needs to manage class in order to accommodate everyone needs and expectations. Most people know how to behave but a small amount do not and it is important to set the rules (Gravels A&Simpson ,2008) It is vital that Ground Rules are set. There is an agreement between student and tutor of acceptable behaviour in the learning environment. Ground Rules should be set at the start of the course to create safe learning environment, promotes tolerance ,respect and cooperation(Gravels, A& Simpson,2008;11. Ground rules must mutually be agreed and put into practice and discussion will allow tutor to steer group to outcome. Several ways of creating Ground Rules; if time is an issue to simply list the rules but ask if agreeable and mention the fact of shortage of time. If more time important to generate a list ask student what they as individuals need to ensure a safe environment and to discuss difficult controversial issues, if participants have difficulties with list for success of facilitation try to prompt towards it if still difficulty add to the list. Ground Rules facilitate discussion by students drawing up their rules that have to be abided by and therefore are more likely to be adhered to rather than dictating what the rules should be causing people to not want to abide by the rules. This encourages students to work collaboratively in developing a respectful environment and establishes a process of group participation rather than being Instructor led lecture. It will remind the students of the importance of being respectful, open and sensitive and encourage the group to interact and provide feedback. It will show the advantages and disadvantages of having Ground Rules and the consequences of not having Ground Rules.
