ANALYSE DIFFERENT WAYS IN WHICH YOU WOULD ESTABLISB GROUND RULES WITH YOUR LEARNERS , WHICH UNDERPIN BEHAVIOUR AND RESPECT FOR OTHERS INTRODUCTION In this assignment , I will define ground rules , the needs for ground rules ,how these rules are formed and why it is important not to violate these from both the teacher and the learners perspective . I shall define human behaviour and respect and in a critical analysis I will argue how ground rules can influence our behaviour and respect for others. Ground rules has been defined by Amerton (2005) as the minimum necessary conditions requires for learning to take place in a classroom. It is a general consensus and Gravells (2009) argued that ground rules are created at the beginning of courses and it is a mutually agreed arrangements which ensures that learners views, opinions and needs are met, valued and respected. Rules should be negotiated within the team not imposed by the teacher . Emphasis is placed on maintaining the ground rules agreed , a copy is given to each learners at the beginning of the second session to ensure that all learners adhere to these, any changes should be addressed at this point . It is equally important that ground rules are visited occasionally and this is no different in Preparing to teach in the Lifelong sector ( PTLLS) . Fox (2005) also argued a viable working consencus agreed by all learners and advocates further that all learners needs boundaries and rules within which to work from the start, these rules should be maintained and respected by all for consistency . If rules are broken then this should be addressed within the group or individually by the teacher so that it does not have an impact on other learners. Example might be a learner turning up for classes late every Thursday evenings smelling of alcohol and being disruptive in the class. This has an impact on all the learners and should be addressed immediately by the teacher on a 1:1 session or may be a referral to another Department in the Education System. Faculty of Development (2008) has highlighted that ground leaves are assumed and problems are rare but it is an important concept and should involved every-one. Good examples of ground rules is the teacher having prepared a lesson plan arrived a few minutes early , stetting up the session and all learners are punctual hence ground rules is not only for the learners but the teachers too. In order for teachers to be respected by their learners ,there are certain rules that they should adhere to, this will promote respect from their learners if the maintain high standards. Ground rules are usually group by various names such as boundaries, NMC Code of Practice and xxxxxxx as defined for teachers . Rules incorporate essential issues why may be required by Law in any Organisation or Establishment for example Health and Safety rules is applicable to every-one ‘’ in case of fire every-one must vacate the premises if there is a constant Fire alarm ringing in the Department.’’ These rules create and encourage disciplines within the learning environment and guide us as to what should happen in this situation, it is not negotiable. One can therefore argue that if a teacher alone set ground rules , then the learners are at a disadvantage and may feels that rules have been imposed on them rather than negotiated with them. For example a teacher setting ground rules that are too rigid may discourage attendance in classes , it is better to work with the learners that against them. Ground rules is equally a two way process and allow learners and teachers to be accountable for their behaviour with a view to promote confidence and respect for each other and promote learning. Behaviour is our action, conduct , demeanour and manners , Respect is showing consideration to others. Behaviour and respect for others are learned concepts from our parents, ‘ threat and respect others for the way you want to be treated and respected. ’ has been instilled in us from a young age and it is an important concept and is linked to the way we conduct ourselves in Society. Respect is a mutual thing , it’s about sharing and valuing others views and opinions in the classroom irrespective of our age, gender , sexuality , culture , colour and ethnicity. In my clinical practice some ground rules are set from the start, they are not negotiable. As a nurse therapist , one is not allowed to have a relationship with our clients because they are vulnerable and it could affect the delivery of care. NMC code of practice xxxxxxxx. Hence clear ground rules are set which is not negotiable from the start , it is showing respect for our vulnerable clients. In the PTLLS course , once ground rules are set, they should not be respected by all and if any-one starts to violate these rules is a sign of disregard and being disrespectful to others. Hence it is important to revisit ground rules and the expectation of each learners. For example a female learner trying to divide the group because she does not like the elderly group in the classroom and observed to be sarcastic and arrogant in classroom. This behaviour should be tolerated further and the group as a whole should decide what the approach to take to tackle the age discrimination. This example demonstrate the need to have ground rules and if broken can have an impact on others through lack of respect and inappropriate behaviour. Hence in the prison service , all students meet up with their mentors and set the ground rules for their placement on their first day including the rules and regulations of the prison service that are compulsory i.e no mobile phones is allowed in the prison at any time. In conclusion, Leaman (2008) argues that ground rules for PTLLS programme is a requirement , it should be negotiated to protect the relationship between the teacher and the learners . Boundaries help us to stay focus and all learners needs boundaries and rules within which they can contrive as it promotes a healthy relationship and shows respect for each other, accountable for adaptive and mal- adaptive behaviours . If ground rules are broken then it should be addressed immediately formally or informally so that it does not have an impact on learners needs . On the PTLLS Course , there is a diversity of students who have made commitment and they deserve the same rights and respect as every-one else in the course. All learners are encouraged to adhere to the ground rules set behave in an acceptable manner and shows respect and support to each other irrespective of what their differences may be..
