INTO THE WORLD
Green Street Hooligans
Into the world is the process of change in a character as they veer out of their normal life and into another, changing them for the better or the worse. To this subject, I am going to put it into contrast with a text I have studied, which I believe is a good movie that relates to ‘Into The World’. The movie is called ‘Green Street Hooligans’ and is Written and Directed by Lexi Alexander.
The plot of this movie is about a quiet defend less American character named Matt Buckner, who is expelled from Harvard where he is studying Journalism, due to what was believed to be possession of cocaine. Though the cocaine belonged to his rich snobby roommate Jeremy Van Holden and was afraid to speak up, as the Van Holden’s are a powerful Family and didn’t want to ruin their family status. Matt then moves to the England where he plans to stay about his sister and until he figures out what he is going to do with himself. This is where he meets his brother in laws younger brother, Pete Dunham. Pete is a soccer hooligan, but still very loyal to the public. He is the main leader off the Green Street Elite, or GSE, which is a firm that support the West ham United’s Football Team.
The rest of the plot is about Matt realising about loyalty, and brotherhood and how to stand his ground with his newfound friends, yet keeping from them about what he had studied in Harvard, which was journalism, as they despise journalists, and how they always lie in newspaper.
One of there boys finds out and turns rogue, and snitches to the other team, a massive brawl is planned and Pete Dunham is killed. Matt moves back to the states and with his newfound abilities of loyalty and brother hood and most of all, to stand his ground. Therefore he confronts Jeremy Van Holden as he is in the toilet snorting cocaine, and cunningly records what he had to say to blackmail him into bringing him back into Harvard.
Now in relation to INTO THE WORLD, I will be talking about Matt Buckner. Matt at the start of this text is a quiet, wimpy self-defenceless bloke, but due to him moving to him moving to England and meeting Pete Dunham, he has learnt the skills of loyalty, brotherhood and how to stand his ground when the time comes.
In the film, the first fight scene where matt is involved, the fight was clearly uneven as the opposing firms size at this time was double the size of theirs. Matt was scared and therefore wanted to run away yet he was told to stand his ground. One of Pete’s friends tells Matt to just think of someone he absolutely hates and imagine that he is the guy is he fighting. During this fight, he realises the act of brotherhood amongst the boys, and loyalty to one another. This one fight has given him the fix he has needed to keep hanging out with them.
Throughout the movie, Matt sees more of the loyalty of the boys towards the public. For example, he finds out that Pete is a History Teacher, and all his students love him! Another act of loyalty he has seen in Pete is the scene where they are sitting down in a packed train, and they notice a lady with two kids standing up, and they offer them the seat. To my understanding, this must’ve been the point where Matt notices the good in the boys the most.
Also in the Movie, all of the boys are one there way to a game in Manchester, when they receive a call saying not to get off the train as there is a whole bunch of the Manchester Firm waiting for them outside the station. Matt gives them a plan for how they are going to get around this and they successfully do it humiliating the other crowd. Towards the end of this scene, they are running in slow motion with big smiles congratulating Matt, which would be there acceptance towards him. This would be a definite milestone in Matt’s journey as he is now part of the firm. To acknowledge this, they even went out with him to get a tattoo of the firm and soccer club on his chest to symbolise loyalty and involvement with them.
In conclusion to this speech, I believe that this film is a great text for this elective as the character has had life changing experiences, learnt new skills, been accepted into a firm, and put all these new skills to confront the man the ruined his life in the first place.
And little acts like these are the things that change the person that Matt is and for the better.
