Marketing to Leisure Travellers
Introduction:
This assignment is all about "Going Green" and sustainable Tourism. It is an ever growing segment in Hospitality at the moment and with everybody's cooperation it is the pathway towards responsible tourism. Responsible Tourism may be regarded as a behaviour, the way in which we choose to attempt to save the planet. Responsible Hospitality is essentially about creating better places for people to live in, and better places for people to visit. There are many ways in which hotels can play an active role in our environment, with the correct sustainable methods and the proper implementation of 'green' practices. Energy Policy is the manner in which a given identity has decided to address issues of energy development including energy production, distribution and consumption. The attributes of energy policy may include legislation, international treaties, incentives to investment and guidelines to energy conservation. Environmental Policy this refers to the ecosystem but can also take account of the quality of life and resource management.
What lead to the establishment of Eco-green hotels'
Government authoritative rule Need for the balanced ecology and the idea of saving greenery on earth Greener and natural accommodation requested by guests Fact that environmentally responsible activities are greatly required
How do Eco-green hotels promote waste management'
Eco-green hotels have implemented a lot of waste management program in order to utilize the waste products by recycling them and eventually saving non-renewable resources. Following are some wonderful steps adopted by the Eco-green hotels in order to save exhaustible resources:
Steps to save exhaustible resources: Kitchens:
- Separate waste so that it can be recycled - Composting food waste to place on the gardens as fertilizers - By energy efficient kitchen equipment - Ventilation systems that turn grease into ozone for the environment - Only make enough food will reduce waste and energy usage - Use water saving valves on Taps - Scrape food off plates don't wash it off - Use appropriate size oven (if only making a small amount of food, use a smaller oven) - Avoid opening ovens when cooking. allows heat to escape - Replace lights with compact fluorescent light bulbs - Use environmentally friendly chemicals to wash floors and dishes - Buy from local suppliers - Only wash full loads of dishes - Recycle and reuse where possible
Gardens:
- Use kitchen waste as compost plants - Use excess water from pool or guest waste water on the garden - Plant indigenous plants that use less water - Plant vegetables and herbs to use instead of buying them (less transport pollution) - Use worm farms to get rid of food waste and make compost for the garden.
Guest rooms:
- Implement key card lighting and HVAC system to reduce energy usage - Implement alternative wash days for guest towels and linen to reduce water and energy usage - Use Eco- friendly guest amenities (shampoo, conditioner etc) - Replace bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs - Use natural light as much as possible (windows) - Use energy efficient equipment wherever possible - Might be able to use lighting sensors in rooms to reduce energy usage - Install proper insulation as to minimize use of HVAC system - Use dual-flush toilets and low-flow taps in guest rooms - Use organic cotton on all guest beds
Public Areas:
- Use as much natural light as possible - Use Eco-friendly chemicals for cleaning - New technology (filters light from outside into dark areas) - Use waste heat recovery for heating your building - Try and use electronic advertising rather than printing out advertisement on paper - Don't use unnecessary water features, find alternative decorations - Use recycled timber for furnishings - Blend in with the natural surroundings - Liquid soap dispenser in public area toilets
Laundry:
-Using environmentally friendly chemicals - Buy chemicals in bulk where possible - Setting the washing machine at lowest possible temperatures - Making sure the tumble dryers lint-screen is clean as to use less energy - Always do a full load of washing to save water and energy - Using disposable cleaning cloths with chemicals preloaded onto them - Regularly service machinery as to prolong their working life - Making sure outsourced laundry companies are environmentally friendly - Using closely located outsourced laundry companies as to minimize pollution - Reuse the heat from the laundry room to heat up other places in the hotel
Others:
- Utilizing the recycled papers and soy based inks for stationary - Using tap water in pitchers instead of the mineral water bottles - Buying or making some inexpensive cloth napkins instead of thousands of paper napkins - Creating areas for recycling and sorting trash from the waste within the premises of the hotel - Using timers in irrigation and electrical equipment systems for water and energy conservation - The plantation of those plants which consume less water - Avoiding the use of artificial light in offices when the natural light is already sufficient - Switching off appliances and lights in which while not occupied - Turning off bathroom's lights and fans if not in use - Installing the light sensors to educate and remind office employees about wasted light - Using rechargeable batteries for office devices - Turning the computers if not in use or by applying the computer's energy saving systems such as hibernate, sleep mode, screen saver etc - Arranging office conferences and meeting mostly during the daytime - Making sure that the windows and doors are closed if heater or air -conditioner is on - Using devices and equipments of higher efficiency - Educating the employees to adapt correct procedures of energy uses
Conclusion:
So to effectively be going green and creating better places for people to live in, and better places for people to visit, start today. There are many sections in Hotels which can go green, just to mention a few. Laundry, Kitchen, Guestrooms, Gardens, Public areas. Separating between plastic and glass, using natural light, closing windows when using air-con, even these simple things can start to make a difference. Educating the employees is an important role and will assist the Hotel in going green the most.
