Mental Process Paper
Mental process is defined as “the performance of combination thought processes or an operation that affects mental contents” [ (Free Dictionary, 2010, p. 1) ]. Creative intelligence is one part of the mental process aspect. When making business decisions, the use of creative intelligence is used daily. The content of this paper will focus on comparing and contrasting the four styles of creative intelligence and their influence on organizational decision-making; a discussion on the five forces that influence one’s mental models and mindsets and how it limits mental models and mindsets; and the most commonly used mental models and mindsets that guide Sedonia’s decision-making in her workplace.
Four styles of creative intelligence
Creative intelligence has four styles: intuitive, innovative, imaginative, and inspirational style. Intuitive style “focuses on results and relies on past experiences to guide decisions (Rowe, 2004, p. 3). Innovative style “concentrates on problem-solving and relies on data” (Rowe, 2004, p. 3). Imaginative style uses visual opportunities or more of an artistic aspect of decision-making permitting one to “think out the box” (Rowe, 2004, p. 3). “Inspirational style focuses on social change” (Rowe, 2004, p. 3). Intuitive and innovative styles are similar because persons who make decisions may form an action plan on how he or she should handle a problem or rely on past data to resolve problems. Imaginative and inspirational styles can be one in the same as well since one who creates the social change while making decisions usually takes (thinking out the box) creative thoughts to make those decisions work.
The variation between the four creative intelligence styles are intuitive styles has to match the situation with a similar situation and perform an analysis of the outcome of that situation prior to making any decisions. However, Innovative style gathers facts and uses only those facts to formulate the decision in which a more systematic approach may be used. Imaginative style applies a more bizarre approach when making decision by applying creativity instead of solid facts. Inspirational style major principle is to create decisions that inspire or help others oppose to gaining revenue. Determined upon the circumstances a combination or one of the styles maybe used in everyday life. Despite what creative intelligence style one uses every tool is excellent for management in making important business decisions.
Influence on organizational decision-making
Regardless of what the situation may be creative intelligence styles have an influence in business decisions. As previously discussed creative intelligence styles can be used together or separately. Intuitive style influences company decisions by studying related topics. Based on previous results of similar topics, companies can fix errors and provide improved decisions. For instance, at times attorneys use related cases to make decisions on ways he or she should argue a case. Innovative style is somewhat similar to intuitive style. Innovative style requires research on an issue before making business decisions. For example, the wireless companies issued a number of surveys on consumers to discover what type of service he or she may need. In particular, busy consumers needed the convenience of Internet use without being tied down to a desktop or laptop computer, therefore wireless Internet service became available to mobile phones. Not only did busy business people need this service but also stay-at-home parents, college students, travelers, and further.
Imaginative style influence business decisions when companies want to be distinctive from competitors. Case in point, Microsoft versus Apple is an imaginative style. Microsoft Windows is a popular inexpensive software. However, consumers were dissatisfied with the Windows maintenance; thus some consumers altered his or her operating system to Mac computers. Mac computers have better Internet service and it has a low chance of catching viruses. Even though Mac computers cost more than a Window-based computer, consumers are willing to pay the extra buck because Mac is less compatible with applications and websites. Mac computers were growing rapidly so Microsoft Windows introduced Windows7 to consumers. Windows7 is designed to be safer, faster, and better than its competitors. The impression Microsoft is relating is by developing Windows7 they are acting in response to consumers’ criticisms by producing an operating system that is free from errors. As far influencing business ideas, inspirational styles are different from the other styles. Additional creative intelligence styles influence business ideas for the intentions of gaining revenue or improving the company. On the other hand, inspirational style influences ideas to serve along with help others and indirectly cause a company to profit. A nonprofit organization such as Volunteers of America is an example of inspirational styles. Their key principle is to assist others and gain proceeds from grants or contributions. Even though a company like Volunteers of America is a nonprofit organization, they still must function like an ordinary business to stay afloat.
Five forces of mental models and mindsets
The five forces that influence mental models and mindsets include education, training influence of others, rewards and incentives, and personal experience (Crook, Gunther, & Wind, 2005, p. 12-13). “Education forms a foundation that molds our world view” (Wind, Crook, & Gunther, 2005, p. 12). A person’s mental models and mindset depends on his or her educational background. A doctor may view the world in a different way from a bus driver because of his or her occupation or background. A broad influence such as education permits others to be more open minded.
Training is something a person is willing to do or update as the world changes. If a person is not willing to expand he or she limits their creative intelligence. Influence of others means people are influenced by their surroundings. For example, friends who hand around together on a regular basis tends to adapt on certain issues. “Rewards and incentives is a reflection of our mental models and actions which are shaped by the rewards one receives for holding them” (Wind, Crook, & Gunther, 2005, p. 13). “Personal experience makes it simple to think outside the mainstream” (Wind, Crook, & Gunther, 2005, p. 13). Sedonia’s mental models and mindsets that guide her decision-making are personal-centric.
In conclusion, this paper covered the four styles of creative intelligence, which are intuitive, innovative, imaginative, and inspirational style along with influences on organizational decision making. Another topic was the five forces that influence mental models and mindset and those five forces include education, training, influence of others, incentives and rewards, and personal experience along with examples of how mental models and mindsets may limit the decision-making process.
