Running head: GAP ANALYSIS: GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS Gap Analysis: Global Communications University of Phoenix Gap Analysis: Global Communications Global Communications is a telecommunication company experiencing problems surviving in today’s economy. The increased competition within the telecommunication industry has caused Global Communications stock prices to decline. With the decline in stock prices Global Communications executive leadership team has to act swiftly to make a comeback in the industry and become the leader of the industry. The executive leadership team has introduced a new plan of action to the Global Communications Board in which the board approved. Before Global Communication can implement its new plan a gap analysis has be done. A gap analysis is “a method of improving a company's financial performance by reducing the gap between current results and long-term objectives” (2007). This gap analysis will indentify issues and opportunity with the new action plan in which Global Communications is facing, the stakeholder perspectives, the end stated vision and the gap between Global Communications current conditions and its end stated vision. Situation Analysis Issue and Opportunity Identification With today’s economy Global Communications has trouble surviving. Indentifying the issues of Global Communications will allow the company to see opportunities that could be taken. The first issue of Global Communications is that the stock has fell more than 50% within the past several years and the competition in the industry is increasing. With the decline in stock of more than 50% Global Communications could be out of business in the near future. The senior executive team has a plan in place in which restructuring of the company will have to take place. The opportunity for Global Communications from the restructure is that the company profits will start to increase and stock will start to multiply. Restructuring of the company will enable Global Communications to meet its customer needs by offering additional and quality service. Restructuring of Global Communications is a custom-made solution by the senior executive team. “Custom-made solutions, by contrast, must be designed for specific problems. A custom-made solution requires combining ideas into new, creative solutions” (Bateman & Snell, 2004, p. 71). The second issue of Global Communications is that the communication of the new action plan was not told to all executive key players prior to the plan being approved. The senior executive team of Global Communications did not include the vice president of Technologies Workers Union in developing the new plan. Conflict between the team arose because of lack of communication. “Communications is a key driver in knowledge management. It brings knowledge into the organization and distributes it to employees who require that information” (McShane & Glinow, 2005, p. 324). Global Communications has the opportunity to reduce conflict between executive members by communicating information with all team members before final decisions are made. The third issue of Global Communications is determining how to communicate the part of the new plan regarding layoffs to its employees. Announcing a layoff cannot be put into words that sound good but Global Communications senior executive leadership team wants to filter the announcement of layoffs to its employees. “Filtering involves deleting or delaying negative information or using less harsh words so that events sound more favorable” (McShane & Glinow, 2005, p. 334). Global Communications should be honest with its employees whether the information is negative or positive. In filtering the new action plan and the employees see flaws within the information, then Global Communications reputation could become damage because the company would be going against its core values. As soon as Global Communications inform its current employees of the new plan the company can start implementing the plan and start its new future. Stakeholder Perspectives/Ethical Dilemmas Stakeholders of Global Communication have different perspective on issues regarding the company. The stakeholders are vital to the company and all have different roles. Global Communications stakeholders include the senior leadership team of the company, the vice president of Technologies Workers Union and the employees of the company. The senior leadership team of Global Communication is concerned about the company’s future and has a right to make decision for the company. Because of the decline in stock prices and the increase in competition the senior leadership introduced an action plan that was approved by Global Communications. The approval of the new action plan has caused an ethical dilemma for the senior leadership team. The ethical dilemma the senior leadership team is facing is informing employees about the upcoming layoffs; the layoffs are part of company new action plan. With the ethical dilemma the senior leadership team faces the teams has to be honest, creative, and knowledgeable. The senior leadership has to be honest when informing the employees about the new plan. Creativity and knowledge will allow the senior leadership team to come up with way to introduce the new plan to the employees. The vice president of Technologies Workers Union main concern is the employees of Global Communications. The vice president has a duty to make sure all employees of Global Communications treat its employees fairly. The vice president has a right to know about the plans of Global Communications because the vice president is a partner of Global Communication. Knowing about the plans the vice president could have taken other measures when negotiating reduction in benefits for the company. Not aware of the new action plan of the senior leadership team has caused and ethical dilemma for the vice president of Technologies Workers Union. The values in which the vice president has to have are trust, fairness, and integrity. The employees of Global Communications main concern is their livelihood. Employees never know what companies are planning. As soon as the company decide on new plans the employees has a right to know the details of the plan. The senior leadership team planning to announce the new action plan to its employees. Not knowing how the new action plan will affect the employees the employee has an ethical dilemma. The employees do not know if they will receive good or bad news from the company. The employee’s values are curiosity, eagerness, and understanding. The stakeholders of Global Communications are important in the future of the company. Each stakeholder has to understand the role of other stakeholder. Understanding each stakeholder roles will eliminate some of the ethical dilemmas within the company. End-State Vision Global Communication has set the course to be the preferred telecommunications provider in all international markets; providing top notch telecommunication services at a reasonable price to customer across the world. Gap Analysis Global Communications have to overcome the competition in its industry. To overcome competition with the cable companies the senior executive team has a plan in place where the company will offer video service and a satellite version of broadband to its customer. The company will introduce new services to its small businesses and consumer customers who will be served around the world. Global Communication has to reduce cost. To reduce cost the senior leadership team plans to market the company more aggressively international. Conclusion Global Communication problems are causing the company to go downhill. Stock prices are dropping and competition is on the rise. The senior management team has plans that will increase profits for the company and make the company more competitive. While developing the new plan the senior management team did not include the vice president of Technologies Workers Union so tension arose between the two teams. The senior management team also has problems communicating the new plan to its employees. Before the approval of the new plan the senior executive leadership team should have thought about the other stockholder of the company, which includes the employees and the vice president of Technologies Workers Union. Evaluating the problems of Global Communications the senior leadership team ca me up with a solution that would help Global Communication meet its goal of become the leader in the industry.
