Casual Argument Nate Leese Harmony through fierce means Genghis Khan, arguably one of the most influential leaders since human existence is famous for his ferocity and brutality in war tactics, however one of the most astounding accomplishments was the ability to stimulate unity among a multitude of differing cultural groups, many which were in conflict with their adjacent nations in previous centuries. Through Genghis’s reign he developed a form of governing, which went past rules and regulations, it encompassed the Mongol customs intertwined with the Khan’s judgment and teachings. “The Great Yasa” as it is known embraced strict values and rulings that initiated the unity understood throughout the empire’s life. Tolerance was an attribute that was widely practiced throughout The Mongol Empire during expansion and after, especially when on the topic of religion. Genghis was not part of any organized religious group and proclaimed that no individual one should be put higher in society than another. This was very popular, especially throughout his campaigns in China where religious tolerance was not practiced earlier. It gave the people a kind of authoritarian freedom where they were governed strictly but given the right to believe what they want to believe. Something that somewhat goes along with this idea of tolerance is the commitment to equality. Genghis believed that the poor and rich should not be on different social levels and should be treated equally neither to be swindled. Another way that the empire thrived was the demand for high potential among its members. Each member of a society group had to commit themselves fully to the best of their ability toward there work and actions through life. The Yasa stressed that to gain achievement and title one must work hard and essentially if you don’t we will punish you. This gave incentive to work and in turn develop skills to help community and enrich life. Although ruthless with his campaigning, his strict yet very fair set of customs produces some criticism toward the validity of the Yasa itself. However when we look through history many have done this in the past, for example the Persian king Cyrus who ruled the nearly all of the middle east and at his time controlled the most land anyone had seen running on the first “humanitarian code of law.” It makes sense how Genghis could have done a similar thing just adding some more area to the equation.
