Gender Difference in Listening Listening in simple word is related to listening to your friends and family or simply when engaging a conversation. This type of listening is hard because most of the time people tend to get lost on their own thoughts or do not take the speaker seriously. After referring different articles I found gender difference with listening. Both male and female have different style of listening. “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”. This sentence is famous one that at least all must have heard once. Men and women are different in listening more precisely. They listen for different reasons and by that they seek different information. Men focus on the facts when women focus on the mood of the communication. Researchers like Canary and Hause (1993) have concluded , after analyzing hundreds of studies that gender differences in communication are small and inconsistent; that is, about 1% of the variance. Usually Women communicate in larger extent than men, they always tries to get more information from the speaker for their personal use. On the other side men see this as a waste of time. Therefore what the man do is, they don’t listen carefully of the speaker what they are speaking and they don’t perceive their message as important. Men always go straight to the point, so these women getting more information and by that way they make situation better. Here there are some points how both gender are different form each other. Let’s assume first for the men. First, always be patient because women always need to express more information about the condition and they provide everything in order. Second, be engaged because some time due to lack of reaction women feel that men don’t care about what they are saying. Third, don’t assume. Don’t assume what they are saying is not important because the subject is not important to you. Now let’s assume for women. First, be realistic, don’t always expect the person that they will react in the way that you want it to be. So if their reaction frustrate, then don’t go mad saying their reaction is confusing. Second, always stay calm and free, don’t get angry and also there is no need to analyze what the other sex says. Third, say what you mean, sometime more often people play games, don’t do that and don’t go around the subject. It’s not really easy for men to deduct the women mind. As it’s discussed, earlier that men and women have different listening style. According to the studies conducted, on the basis of that it’s found that men and women have different ways of listening. Women usually tend to include continuous head nodding and other positive listening habits more frequently than men. Men include very less behaviors then women in their listening. It makes great impact on women and men that women feels that their husband are not listening and men feels that their wives are over listening. In addition, when women nods their head and say something like “uh hah” then it implies that they are paying attention and understanding the points what the speaker is trying to say. But on the other hand men use the noises for the agreement that they are listening equally as women do but actually they are agreeing less than women. Infect listening is complicate process for both of them. They both tend to focus on the communication. By listening behaviors women show their interest in it rather than merely agreement of emotional aspects of relationship. So they both are equally consistent in listening styles. There are certain things that interest and benefit to me from this whole research. I found some difference between male and female how they were different in the way they listen. It is necessary to take into consideration the multiple advantages that can derive from it, in the workplace and by extension in the classroom. I learn that sometimes it saves time and money if it is understood in terms of business point of view. Men and women get enhanced motivation and encouragement from each other. I had also learned how to listen to the speaker and how to get information from what they are trying to say. Always pay attention what speaker is saying and take that subject as important don’t perceive as unimportant.
