To work together effectively as a team, and accomplish a given task can be very satisfying, but very challenging at the same time. Each member of this team needs to know all of the team’s personality traits and learning styles in order to understand each team member’s opinions. By knowing each team member’s qualities will allow the group to develop a strategy to communicate in an effective way, and come-together with other member’s in the group.
After finishing the Multiple Pathways to Learning and the Personality Spectrum assessments, I found that my learning style is that of an Intrapersonal person and my personality type is dominant as a Giver. This information is very important as a student because I can use this information to make the most of my study habits while continuing my education. Also, to know what works best as a student, it is in the same way important to be conscious of the other learning styles and personality types so I can work well with other students.
In addition to the Intrapersonal style of learning that I am dominant in, there are some other learning styles that may make up a group. These styles of learning include Visual-Spatial, Verbal-Linguistic, and Logical-Mathematical ways of learning. An individual like myself dominant in the Intrapersonal style of learning are able to cooperate well within a group, are able to see things from others view’s, and communicate both verbally and non verbally to get his or her point across (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits 2007). Also, because I cooperate well in a group, and communicate effectively, it would be easy for me to collaborate with these individuals, discuss his or her opinion on the subject matter, and work together with them to complete the task. I would communicate in a friendly way to inspire a team effort. Another learning style pointed out by Carter, Bishop, & Kravits (2007), is the Verbal-Linguistic style of learning. Individuals dominant in this type of learning are able to remember terms easily is good at understanding syntax and word meaning, enjoys teaching, explaining, learning, and has a sense of humor. Communicating with these individuals should be rather easy because of his or her strength in understanding grammar, sentence structure, and word meanings, and helping to understand an assignment or if one needs this person to look over his or her work. An additional learning style mentioned by Carter, Bishop, & Kravits (2007), is the Logical-Mathematical way of learning.
Individuals who are dominate with this learning style rationale deductively and inductively, and can do difficult calculations, and scientific reasoning. When collaborating with this individual’s learning style, I would integrate a logical and chronological way to the learning by using charts, outlines or graphs. The common sense approach would be the best way to reason with this person, keeping the tone in a formal, logical manner. Even though the different learning styles divide how others work in a group together and communicate with each other, it is a good thing to know the different personality traits that make-up the team so, everyone can effectively work together.
My personality type is that of a Giver. There are three other personalities’ types in addition to this, that make-up the personality scale. They are the Organizer, the Adventurer, and the Thinker. With all of these personality traits bring a different method to a group and need to be handled in different ways. When collaborating with an individual who possesses the Giver personality, I would ask for his or her assistance if a conflict should arise within the team.
The characteristic of an Organizer personality is one who is responsible, reliable, neat and organized. He or she is loyal, well-organized, and oriented to detail. The tone when communicating with this individual will be specific and distinct in clear and to the point terms (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits 2007).
Adventurer type personalities have soaring skills in different fields, like the hands-on problem solving method, and enjoy the nontraditional method of learning. When doing work with this type of personality, I would try to come up with traditional unusual ways of learning to ruse this person. Even though some learning cannot be done using the hands on approach, imaginative puzzles or games may make this person learn easier.
The last personality is the Thinker type personality, and is one who is good at making models and systems uses abstract and logical thinking. This person has a sense of resourcefulness, and can solve problems successfully (Carter, Bishop, & Kravits 2007). When communicating with this type of individual, I would ask his or her opinion, how to solve or go about finishing a task because of his or her ability to form thoughts easily. His or her ability to solve problems in an intelligent way may be a very important addition to any team.
If we did not have communication and working together as a team, getting tasks done, and meeting deadlines would be near impossible. We need to understand, develop, and stick to individual learning styles and personality types within a team. This is vital to come together and ensures the overall success of the team. By means of understanding the diverse characteristics of the different learning styles and personality types, it is much easier to work together as a team to achieve the task at hand.
