Final Project 2
Mrs. Cheryl Boone is a Special Education Teacher at Ann Chestnut Elementary School in Fayetteville North Carolina. Mrs. Boone has given me permission to do this interview. I would like to thank her for sharing her wonderful life story with myself and Axia College faculty and student body.
Mrs. Boone was born June 3, 1950, in Bronx New York and was raised with a set of identical twin sisters that were younger with attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder. At the age of 13years old Cheryl was the primary care taker of her twin sisters, her mother and father both had to work and in the evening she was left to baby sit. In Cheryl earlier years there were not many places equipped to handle minority children with this type of disorder. Cheryl being a very bright child herself understood the importance of helping her sibling to learn as much as possible. Cheryl took it upon herself to read and research as much as possible on this disorder. Cheryl wanted to be able to help her sisters live as normal a life as possible.
Cheryl graduated from St. Anne high school in 1966 with honors to receive a scholarship to attend A & T University in Greensboro N.C. where she earned a bachelor degree in psychology. Cheryl worked her first teaching job in Guilford County in a children home for children with Autistic Disorder. While working in this children home Cheryl earned her Master Degree and PHD in psychology at Duke University. Cheryl was recruited by the Cumberland County School board to outline a program for their school system in special education. Cheryl has been a Special Education teacher for the Cumberland School system for last 15 years.

Cheryl explains that living with her sisters with this disorder and the love she had for them, gave her the path she has chosen to help others. Cheryl believes that with proper
Schooling, medical care and medication, understanding, children with attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder can be taught to live a normal and productive life.
Cheryl remembers information more accurately if she observes the behavior being performed. Cheryl believes that classical and operant conditioning both depend on direct experience and stimulus control. Behaviorists and social learning theorists prefer this method of assessing personality because it allows them to see how situations influence behavior and to note the range of behaviors the person is capable of exhibiting. ( Chapter 11, Personality pp 442, ) Cheryl believe observing without the child or person knowing it gives a better unbiased account.
Cheryl experience of teaching and studying children behavior with disorder, she has learned that reading behavior that others have given is not based directly on each individual. Cheryl believes that all children can have the same disorder but act differently with them. She thinks it is very important to understand the thoughts feelings and behavior of an individual.

Cheryl said that the Myer Briggs Test that she had taken before said that she was a nurturer and social person. She believes that this test can only be accurate if the person taking the test answer honestly about themselves. [pic]

Cheryl experiences that contributed most in the development of her personality are race, religion, and some hereditary factors that contribute to personality development. The operant Conditioning of her child hood was much love and nurturing from both parents, grandparents. The result of interactions with the particular social environment in which he or she live an Individual's personality as created by forces outside the individual's intentions, namely nature (biology, genes) and nurture (family, peers, culture). Cheryl can intentionally contribute to her on development. “(Chapter 11, pp.441-46)”
Cheryl self-monitoring is extrinsic motivation gives time to think and make choices, and have an appreciation of the task which will rather generate a more creative output. Intrinsic motivation however, satisfies my inner from the activity process I perform, rather than from its result”. The interview’s answer supports both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation but she prefers more intrinsic motivation for it is a stimulation of her interest. (Chapter 9, pp 332)
Cheryl thinks that the strongest influence on her attitude is life perspective. How we create our attitudes and what, influences make us understand our choices that life is all about perspectives. Cheryl attitudes are mainly affected by her personal experiences and parental attitudes. Race and ethnicity do play a big role on how a person forms his or her personality and attitudes.

difference and gender races were distinguished by skin color, facial type, cranial profile and size, and texture and color of hair. Races were almost universally considered to reflect group differences in moral character and intelligence. I would define class-race-gender as reflecting three related social spheres: (1) social structural relations of class, race, and gender; (2) social movements to change these relations; and (3) the knowledge or ideas produced from a consciousness, activism, and analysis of these relations. Class-race-gender offers a way not only to theorize about social structure, but also to link social-movement politics and struggles with a changed consciousness and analysis of structure and process. A key element to class-race-gender is that social relations are viewed in multiple and interactive terms -- not as additive “(Spelman, 1982, 1989; King, 1988) ( Questia: Journal Article, by Kathleen Daly, Vol. 20, 1993).”

Final Project 7
Cheryl motivation comes from the pleasure one gets from the task itself or from the sense of satisfaction in completing or even working on a task. She is truly intrinsically motivated and this has been one of her special uniqueness that her devotion, love and compassion for children with special needs have been her goal since the age of 13 years old.
Cheryl and I, are different in the area in what motivated and gave us our different passion in life. My life was different being raised in the south in the country on a large farm. My father was a disable veteran but also worked and my mother was a stay home mom. I always wanted to work with veterans because growing up I seen how hard it was for veterans to receive their benefits. So my father gave me the passion to want to help veterans to get their benefits. Being a military spouse for over 16 years with a disable veteran spouse has kept me on this path. We are very similar because we are nurturer and social people. My behavior is attributed to my race, gender and hereditary factors, parent, grandparent love and guidance are similar in my operant conditioning. My attitude is mostly attributed by personal experiences and family, friends, career as a military spouse for 26 years. Cheryl and I, are different in this area because my passion has always been concerning wounded veterans. Cheryl passion came from a life of being with sisters with special needs. Our passion and caring for others is where the similarity is. I believe that observing gives a better understanding of individual behavior. When I can observe, visual is a key form of my ability in learning and remembering. Cheryl and I are very similar in this area. I believe things are more accurate when a person can observe, take notes and compare behavior for a time. Cheryl and I are different in the areas we chose to study. I

study by music or the sound of the television on in the background. I prefer some form of noise around me while I study. Cheryl and I, was very similar in the result on the Briggs Test, I was rated as a nurturer and social person. I also think that a test is only as accurate as a person honest answer. I am person that is self-monitoring in regard to attitudes because this is a more taught or learned behavior especially from my youth on. I was always told what behavior was acceptable, and what was not. My parents had exceptional influence on the reason that I monitor my behavior. I think Cheryl and I are similar in this area to. I have the same beliefs as Cheryl does on the strongest influence on attitudes is life perspective in how we create them and what influence we make from them. My race, gender, religion, and social environment, social class is very important in the shaping of my personality which is very similar to Cheryl. Patricia is intrinsically motivated because the thing I do and pursue. This is not for the reward but from the task of the pleasure of doing it. Cheryl and I have more similarity than not. This has been a truly rewarding interview and I am so thankful that I had the chance to do it.
Mrs. Boone is a wonderful and dedicated teacher and leader for those that take on the challenge of helping children with special needs. She has been awarded and recognized seven times for her dedication in this field. I would like to wish her continuing success in her career.
