Title The abundance and distribution of Nodilittorina and Hormosira on Coledale marine rock platform. Field Study data Collection Techniques Quadrat sampling – Sampling units or quadrats are placed randomly or in a grid pattern on the sample area. The occurrence of organisms in these quadrats is noted with halves counted and a whole. Photographs – Photographs were used as a means confirmation concerning the results I obtained through quadrat sampling. Meaning if the results I obtained clearly did not match my photograph, it can be understood that a mistake must have occurred in my data processing. Observations – Observations were used as a means of determining which marine rock platform would be most suitable for my investigation. They were also useful in determining calculations for Nodilittorina and Hormosira. Introduction The nature of my investigation is to determine the abundance and distribution of Nodilittorina and Hormosira on Coledale marine rock platform. I also aim to apply newly found field study techniques and use the information gathered to construct graphs and appropriate conclusions. Aim- To determine the abundance and distribution of Nodilittorina and Hormosira on Coledale marine rock platform. Abundance Method 1. Decide of field study data collection technique – Quadrat sampling. 2. Construct 1m² square from wooden planks. 3. Take photographs of Coledale rock platform. 4. Place wooden box eight times in eight different locations across Coledale rock platform. 5. Decide on counting criteria and conclude that half organisms in box would be counted as whole. Less than half would not be counted. 6. Carry out sampling, carefully examine each selected quadrat and count the number of individuals of each species present. 7. Record data on clip board. 8. Calculate population abundance – Use the combined data totals of the quadrats to estimate the average abundance for each species by using the formula: Abundance = Total number in all quadrats sampled Number of quadrats x area of quadrat 9. Record results. 10. Construct appropriate conclusion. (remember to assess and take appropriate action against any dangers/risks that may occur during the process if this investigation).
