On the waterfront is directed by Elia Kazan, it’s about the coalition violence and corruption amongst the longshoreme. It explores the different perspectives of how power and morals are dealt within the kind of society the characters live in. At the end of the film each of the characters has experienced growth. Whether it is in a positive /negative way. Even within the side watches growth has occurred. Having the support from others many characters find the courage to testify against the mob and stand up for what they believe in. Then there are those who do not get the opportunity to fit in , to be heard. Due to the way the society is structured out to be. Taking advantage of the their power leads certain characters creating negative attitude therefore resulting in negative growth.
There are those who feel that there is an unfair treatment within the society, with the Support from others they find the courage to take action. This creates positive within their personalities. One of the main characters who have is Terry. Terry doesn’t particularly care about work and instead he devotes his dreams, energy, and care to his racing pigeons. This is different to the other longshoremen who plead (beg) to work. At the beginning of the film Terry is used as a prop for Johnny friendly’s plan to kill Joey, he is used in a way which he is disadvantaged and at the same time unaware of the situation in which he is placed in. “He wasn't a bad kid, that Joey.” After unawaringly being part of Joey’s death, he then feels the guilt and need to look after Joeys pigeons. This indicates that Terry’s remorse on his behalf for Joey’s death. Terry witnesses three deaths and there is one death in particular that affects Joey’s growth greatly. The death of his brother, Charlie. Terry was affected by the other deaths but not to the same extent as his own brother’s death. The devastation of finding out that his brother is dead and at the same time it gives him a reason to stand up for himself and for those who couldn’t/wouldn’t testify about the corruption on the waterfront. Providing Evidence is important within their kind of society, people are more likely to listen. Without evidence people are unlikely to believe what you’re saying. The death of Charlie gives evidence that Terry uses to support his testifying against the mob. By the end of the film Joey has developed a positive growth within his character. He found the courage to speak up not only for himself but the people in the community; this shows that he is loyal and brave. Terry overcame his Brother’s death which gave him strength to stand up for what he believed in. Although it was not only Terry himself that had influenced his change in his growth, having the support from Edie and Father Barry influenced Terry and gave him the courage to speak up.
At the beginning of the film Father Barry doesn’t make a good impression on where he stands in the community. He is known to be the man of peace but does not start showing it till Edie questions his role. “I’ll be in the church if you need me” this is a clear indication that Father Barry isn’t truly supportive towards Edie initially after her brother dies. Edie questions Father Barry “Have you ever heard of a saint hiding in a church'” This provokes Father Barry to take action. The feeling of guilt overcomes him and the need to step up to his role in the community. After Joey dies Father Barry calls the longshoremen into church to find out more about his death. He questions the longshoremen about their loyalty and respect to one another. “How can we call ourselves Christians and protect these murders with our silence'” at the stage Father Barry is exhibiting some growth but still hiding away. Father barry is a catalyst for the significant changes in the film as influences the men to do the right thing, he tells them they won’t be ‘ratting’ they will be telling the truth. This statement is effective, strong and gives some longshoremen the courage to speak up.
Father Barry may not have demonstrated his role well within the society but manages to regain the trust. he becomes more active in his role as a priest and becomes more involved in community.
Although Edie hasn’t grown as much as Father Barry or Terry she continues to experience positive growth throughout the film. The death of her brother devastates her dramatically as well as finding out that Terry was unintentionally involved in the death of her brother. She still engages a relationship with Terry after finding out the truth , this is a major positive outcome for Eddies character. The support and courage from the ones around her and accepted things for how they were. Edie struggles to be heard , the way women are treated within their society impacts on her growth. Her opinions and feelings were heard but ignored. Edie
Johnny friendly is a brutal, unfriendly, controlling man. He is the boss of his mob and won’t take no for an answer. We see that at the beginning of the film that he and Terry have a ‘good relationship’ although it’s not a true friendship. The way Johnny treats him compared to the rest of the guys in the mob is different. He tends to be playful with Terry and passing up rewards to him. Johnny is very manipulative and will whatever he can to make sure that he is the only one being heard. As a leader of the mob Johnny does not allow people to disrespect him or testify. It isn’t till the court scene where we start to notice the loss in his power. Terry is supported and finds the courage to testify against Johnny and his mob, by providing relevant evidence from his brother’s death. “lf he calls ever, I'm out!” Mr Upstairs says to his servant, in which indicates that Mr upstairs does not believe that Johnny’s future is very successful. That Terry speaking the truth is strong and likely to ruin Johnny’s future as he provides evidence.
Johnny Friendly has always been seen as a negative growth character throughout the film. By the end of the film he had become or manipulative and controlling towards the people in the community and wouldn’t put up with any nonsense.
There are those in the community who just follow the crowd. The main reason for this being is due to fear. Fear of the mob (Johnny especially) , being judged, opinion and not having the courage to speak the truth due to how the society is made out to be. “Don’t say anything, just keep quiet you’ll live longer” There are few characters who choose to be side watches because they do not know any better. Throughout the film we see that there are few characters that can’t stand up and grow because they are not given the opportunity to. No on supports them. Mrs Collin wants to make a change but doesn’t as she is not supported, instead she is pushed into the shadows. How the society is set out to be impacts on how certain individuals act and therefore affect their overall growth.
Within the film ‘on the waterfront’ directed by Elia Kazan , we are clearly shown that by the end of the film each character has shown some kind of growth. Whether it is negative, postive or a crowd follower. We can see that the writer is trying to get us to agree or disagree , taking into account the morals of each of the characters.
