Causes of World War 1
World War 1, also known as the first world war or the Great war and the war to end all wars. It lasted from 1914-1918.Alliances fought with the central powers. This was the second bloodiest conflict recorded in history. The M.A.I.N causes of world war 1 were; militarism, alliances, imperialism(industrialism) and nationalism. Through this paper you will find in depth about these causes.
What is Militarism' Militarism is the training or the recruitment and the supply of a nation, so that it's leaders believe they will win. It is bloody when two nations think about doing it at the same time. It is one of the ideology that is present through several nations in history. Militarism was one of the main causes of world war 1. An example is when all the three Entente powers held secret military tactics and talks. The British and the French (naval authorities) had an agreement that the French navy should be concentrated in the Mediterranean and the British in the North Sea. Germany and Austria also had a few military agreements. When the First World War was fought, it was to be fought by all powers because they had made the military plan cooperatively.
The second conflict of World War 1 was alliances. Alliances is when nations agree to support each other if attacked. This brings the countries into conflict that have no reason to fight. A number of alliances had been signed by countries between the years 1879 and 1914. These were important because they meant that some countries had no option but to declare war if one of their allies declared war first. In 1879,The Dual Alliance was created, it was when Germany and Austria-Hungary made an alliance to protect themselves from Russia .In 1881 the Austro-Serbian Alliance was created between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. They made an alliance to stop Russia from gaining control of Serbia. In 1882, The Triple Alliance was created. It was when, Germany and Austria- Hungary made an alliance with Italy to stop Italy from taking sides with Russia . In1894, Franco-Russian Alliance was made. It was when Russia formed an alliance with France to protect themselves against Germany and Austria-Hungary. In 1904 there was an agreement, but not a formal alliance, between France and Britain. This was the Entente Cordial alliance. In 1907 two alliances were formed. One was the Triple Entente which was when Russia, France and Britain had to counter the increasing threat from Germany. The other one was the Anglo-Russian Entente , which was basically an agreement between Britain and Russia. Finally the last alliance took place in 1914. In this, Britain, France and Russia agreed not to sign the peace treaty separately. These were alliances that was created between 1879 and 1914.
Another factor which contributed to the increase in rivalry in Europe was imperialism. France,Great Britain and Germany needed foreign markets after the increase in manufacturing( caused by the Industrial Revolution). France, Great Britain and Germany competed for economic expansion in Africa. Although Britain and France resolved their differences in Africa, several crises foreshadowing the war involved the clash of Germany against Britain and France in North Africa. In the Middle East, the crumbling Ottoman Empire was alluring to Austria-Hungary, the Balkans and Russia. World War 1, like the US Civil War, was one of the first modern wars. Many of the tactics were from the 19th century, while the weapons were from the 20th century. Industrialism was another cause because tanks and airplanes were never used in war before. The industrial revolution enabled more effective killing machines to be produced, at a much faster rate. The resulting carnage shocked the world.
The last main cause of world war 1 was nationalism, a belief that your race, religion language and culture is superior and all others are inferior. An example would be when United States joined the war, to show how much power they had.
I believe that militarism played an important role in the war because it contributed to one of the most important and energetic manifestations of most social orders. It exhibits in the strongest, most exclusive manner ;the national, cultural, and class instinct of self-preservation and the most powerful of all instincts. Militarism, carried out with fundamental thoroughness.
As reading this paper, you must have come to realization that World War 1 was indeed an international conflict because of the many causes; militarism, alliance, imperialism(industrialism) and nationalism. These causes had good and bad side effects.
