Facility Planning-Part I Tiffany Williams HCS/446 October 29th, 2012 Marian Cabanillas Facility Planning Proctor Hospital has many locations; however, the one this paper regards in the one in Peoria, IL. Peoria’s Proctor Hospital is focusing resources relating to the senior community at the moment. For instance, Proctor Hospital is aware that seniors have health issue that often times require more and different health care services. This includes seniors with mental health issues, and why Proctor is opening a newly renovated psych unit specifically for the elderly. The unit is known as the Center for Senior Behavioral Health, which includes 18 beds. Proctor will open this unit as of Tuesday, October 30, 2012, but the open house was Monday, October 29, 2012. The open house was invitation only to attract the mental health professionals that would provide referral to Proctor’s new psych unit. The subjects to discuss within this paper include the community need for renovation, type of population renovation is for, and to give a description of the new hospital unit. Peoria Hospitals previous to this, lost a few psych units because they are navigating away from mental health. Proctors new Center for Senior Behavioral Health unit is for the elderly ages 65 or older who endure from change in mood and behavior. According to “Proctor Hospital” (2012) “these changes can be related to adjustment to lifestyle, isolation, loss of independence and then complicated by medical conditions” (Center for Senior Behavioral Health ). Every individual experiences some of these feelings throughout his or her lifetime; however, it is harder to adapt the older one gets. Therefore, the Center for Senior Behavioral Health at Proctor Hospital in Peoria, Illinois has the dedication is takes to meet the needs of elderly physically, and emotionally. Not to mention, the need of the families with involvement of these elderly individuals’ lives. Community need of Renovation The population is aging, and because of this, the elderly community of Peoria county needs Hospitals focuses on the aging population. A unit similar to the Center for Senior Behavioral Health is educational for seniors and their families. Education regarding care of the elderly with mental health issues can increase the life expectancy of baby boomers. Meanwhile, older adults have the education they need also to improve their health before reaching their elderly stage, and have an opportunity to do so early. Mental health in elderly patients needs attention in the Peoria, Illinois area because many health facilities in the area, have or are losing interest in mental health together. This is a major concern for many families in this area that should be with the decrease in resources and health facilities willing to care for these patients. Type of Populations The Center for Senior Behavioral Health at Proctor Hospital is for those who are age 65 or older. Only senior citizens will have access to this unit and will have 10 to 12 days to stay in the unit. Many seniors are in need of this unit; therefore, there is a limit on the number of days, and availability of beds. The facility has a max of 18 beds for patients, this ensures each patient is receiving eminence care in the short timeframe available. Proctor’s new unit does understand they cannot help every elderly person because their mental health could exceed its design. Consequently, is another reason for the short timeframe. Families can visit patients when they are in the hospital, which proctor encourages this behavior from family members. The goal is to education families, and ensures patients return to his or her homes or nursing homes safely. However, Proctor will work to help families place their elderly family member in appropriate placement if need be; to emphasize, not all the time can the elderly patient return to their original setting. In few cases, a patient needs special care that his or her original care setting cannot provide, which may require specialized mental health professionals. Description of the Center for Seniors Behavioral Health at Proctor Hospital Proctor’s new specialty unit will provide 18 beds, comprehensive treatment, family education, and assistance in finding nursing home placement. They will work with those ages 65 or older with depression, anxiety, behavioral concerns, and paranoia. Moreover, Proctor Hospital will assist those elderly experiencing delusions, auditory, visual hallucinations, dementia, and mental health issues. Conclusion Proctor will offer comprehensive mental health treatment in which has the education regarding the uniqueness of aging. According to “Proctor Hospital” (2012), Proctor Hospital provides “inpatient mental health treatment which includes individual, group, and family therapy by social workers, activity therapists, physical therapists, and independent psychiatrists (Center for Senior Behavioral Health). Accordingly, is why the open house had an invitation basis, to ensure mental health professionals had knowledge of their new opening. Even though hospital emergency rooms will possibly have the most references, other mental health care professional’s knowledge of the new unit is important.
