Hippocrates once said that “Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity.” Throughout my life, and my studies, I have found that this saying couldn’t be any more true. Opportunities come in all shapes and forms, and all forms of opportunity can aid in healing, whether that opportunity be in the chance of finding a caring person whom you trust, the luck of having a loving family to comfort you, or the good fortune of still having your life despite injury. Growing up in a Bi-Cultural home with an Ecuadorean Father and a Salvadorean Mother, I was always taught that the best way to achieve your goals was through hard work and determination. I Was Born and Raised in The San Fernando Valley, which is North of Los Angeles populated by mostly middle class families. In this sense, my childhood and adolescence were not terribly unique. My somewhat privileged upbringing gave me a variety of opportunities that I have not taken for granted. Growing up in a society in which upward mobility was a rare achievement. My parents' sacrifice inspired me to excel at school. I saw my father go through countless weeks of daily 12 hour shifts in order to provide my family with a comfortable lifestyle . This deeply affected me as a child and provided me with strong incentive to work as hard as my parents did. In the end, I don’t want to let my dreams and aspirations go to waste, I want to be able to look back one day and feel proud for never giving up on myself.
