I have read the book “lord of the flies”. It is written by William Gerald Golding, an English schoolmaster. The book was published for the first time in 1954. The genre of the book is adventure; in this case the adventures of a group of children on an uninhabited island. The theme of this story is the battle between good and evil, situated as the battle within the hearts of people who become more powerful as civilization is gone. The story is about a group of British boys between six and twelve years old. Because of the war, they were evacuated by plane and dropped on an uninhabited island. With no adult survivors, they created their own "micro-society". Ralph is elected "chief", and he had to organize shelter and fire. Jack, the head of the choir, has to take his boys hunting for food (wild pigs). A bitter rivalry develops between Jack and Ralph as both want to be in charge. The "hunters" became savages and primal under Jack's rule, while Ralph tried to keep his group civilized. The growing hostility between them leads to a bloody and frightening climax. I found it a nice book to read. At First, I like the theme of the book. It is a theme which is new for me. I normally do not read books about adventure and evil. I liked this one because I found the fight of good and evil nicely described. Ralph is the ‘good one’ in the story and tries to keep his group together and Jack is the ‘evil one’, he wants all the power of the group. Also the other part of the theme, the evil in the heart of everyone, is very well described. The young innocent boys become ‘bad boys’ because civilization is left. It was clear what the writer wanted to tell with this book. Secondly, the writing style was good. There were no long sentences and there were just a couple of hard words I had to look up in a dictionary. There were no flashbacks or flash forwards so it was not very hard to read. Likewise, because of the good writing style, you got a very good impression of the beautiful places on the island like the beach, the forest and the dense open place in the forest that Simon had found. The quiet space, filled with flowers, birds and butterflies was very well described; you got the feeling that you were there. At last, all the characters were very well developed and described. Each character fitted perfectly into the story. You could easily identify yourself with the characters. You get involved with Ralph because he wanted to help everybody surviving until they will become rescued. In short, I liked the book because of the nice theme of which I never had read something before. Also the writing style was good and it was not too difficult to read the story. Thirdly the characters were very well developed and fitted perfectly into the story. I would recommend the book to everyone who loves stories about adventure and evil!
