{text:bookmark-start} My Everyday Exposure to Popular Culture {text:bookmark-end} My life consist of popular culture in many different ways, I use all types of artifacts daily. The artifacts I use daily have a big impact on my life because to me they are very important in my everyday living. The most important artifacts are my cell phone, internet, and the television, which I use for pleasure and entertainment. I use other artifacts like the microwave, dryer, and 24 hour stores for my convenience. I use these artifacts to help make my life much easier. I watch television 85% of the day, I wake up and the first thing I do is turn on the television. I get a pleasure out of watching television because I can hear what is happening in my society, watch world news, favorite shows, videos, and play video games. I learn certain things from watching television, how to cook certain meals and eat healthy. I feel I can’t live without a television because it keeps me company when I have no one to talk with. Watching television is a convenience also, because if you have a remote you never have to get up and change the channels. I use the internet on a daily basis, but not as much as I watch television. I’m on the internet on and off during the day, but when I’m on the internet I’m chatting and playing games with family and friends. The internet is a convenience for me because some of my friends don’t have telephones and this is a good source of communication. I like using the internet for various reasons, communicating by e-mail, applying for jobs, home work, researching, and typing up papers. The internet makes it convenient for me to do certain things in my own home without leaving the house. Having a cell phone is a must, it’s the only means of communication me and my children have with each other daily. My cell phone is my life, I text, watch videos, watch movies, and surf the web. I do so much with my cell phone, I’m lost without it. I use my cell phone for convenience and pleasure because if I’m stranded I can call for help, or I can go on face book and chat. Having the convenience of a 24 hour gas station is great you might have to spend a little extra, but you don’t have to drive far and they are on just about every corner. I usually use 24 hour gas stations when I run out of cigarettes late at night, or if I just want something to snack on. I don’t gas up because it’s dangerous, so I wait until later on that morning when more people are out. I love the 24 hour Wal-Mart, I can go shopping in the early mornings without worrying about a big crowds in the store and long lines. What I like most about Wal-Mart I can get everything I need, one stop shop. I rather have a dryer than a washing machine because I can wash some clothes on my hand and put them in the dryer. Sometimes, I accidentally spill juices and food on my clothes, with the convenience of the dryer; I wash the stain out and put it in the dryer for a few minutes. When something is dirty and I don’t want to wear it that day, having a dryer I just wash it on my hands and put it in the dryer. I like how clothes smell after you take them out of the dryer a lot of times when I hang dry certain things I can’t smell the fabric softener. In my house the microwave is being used constantly. I use the microwave daily for popping popcorn, heating up leftovers, and preparing meals. The microwave is a convenience because a lot times I don’t have to turn on the stove, which heats the house up. I have learned how to cook baked potatoes and biscuits in the microwave in just minutes. Having a microwave takes the load off me when I don’t want to cook, just follow the directions and dinner is done. The television, cell phone, and internet, are more common to me because I get pleasure from each one of them in some type of way. I prefer the television for entertainment because there are so many different things I can watch and the convenience of the remote control. I can change channels, control the volume, and change the settings all with the remote control and never have to get up off the couch. I feel popular culture has an impact on my personal decisions, because certain things I use daily is a necessity to me where as in other countries these things have no value. Yes, I am aware of the influence popular culture has on my decision making for the simple fact; commercials influence me all the time about certain products, how mascara can make my lashes look longer and fuller, how I can use certain products to help me lose weight and eat whatever I want, and how certain clothes make you look thinner, so I go and buy these things. The influence has been subconscious, because it wasn’t my intention to purchase these items, but I was persuaded by constantly watching television. On a daily basis I use artifacts for convenience and pleasure; I use things that make my life easier. A lot of the things I use are useless in certain countries, but they are very useful for me. Now that I understand how popular culture has an influence on my life I will change a lot of my decisions to better my life style.
