Gerund When do we use DOING (verb+ing) after verbs' 1. Can be used as a noun. (Either subject or object) 2. Used after suggest when the speaker is included in the suggestion. i. The weather is awful. I suggest going back home. (=The weather is awful. I suggest we go back home.) 3. a) If the subjects in a sentence are the same, we can use gerund to avoid repeating the noun. ii. He insisted that he should go alone. (=He insisted on going alone.) b) We have to state clear if the subjects are different. iii. Would you mind my opening the window' 4. We also use –ing form after an adjective + preposition. iv. I’m interested in learning Chinese. 5. We also say go + -ing with a lot of sports. Note that we don’t use go + -ing to talk about ability or to say how far / well we are able to do something. v. I go swimming every morning. I usually swim fifty lengths. 6.
