Evaluation of teaching session
This narrative will complement the recording that has been made of the teaching session I have delivered to my peers .in it I will aim to explain what I have delivered, why I delivered it, and how I formed it I will also detail the delivery of the session ,and using feedback from peers ,evaluate how the session went. The session I delivered entitled Complete and record a colour skin test, was delivered to a small group of my peers’ picked this subject, because the content and practical activity that is carried out, is easy to put across to small groups , and easy for learners different levels of learning abilitys.the forming of the exercise was also influenced by the theories of group learning and teaching. Watching my peers present their work has also helped me in my own preparation and content of my own work. One of the key moments for me , was watching one of the presentations, which was a crossword created from a software suite called hot potatoes’ thought it was great and looked easy to create and use use PowerPoint frequently, which is fine but hot potatoes has given me another tool to use. Observing my colleagues has broadened my use of IT and inspired me to use a wider range of tools. Observations of my peers and their presentations were videoed as was mine. This also gives your own evaluation of your presentation a very different outlook. Its good because you can see what adjustments need to be made, and what worked ,and what did not .body language, and tone of voice really stand out this exercise has also given me experience of teaching small groups, and how to adapt your lesson. Teaching strategies and methods have to be adapted, and the lesson needs to be broken down into digestible pieces teaching small groups has also increased my knowledge of how to use effective management and how to personalize learning. I have my own natural style of teaching, which is a reflection of my personality, when I prepared for this presentation I considered the variety of leadership and management skills I could use, obviously I used several styles within the lesson, and these styles were dependent upon factors such as the age of the learners, time available, stated outcomes of the session, my strengths and weaknesses, some of which I will state later in this essay from feedback I have received from peers. When you work in a small group it’s important that everyone is aware of how the lesson and their work are going. When I delivered my lesson I gave a clear objective to my peers and using the job breakdown sheet I was able to plan for instruction and demonstration. The job breakdown sheet I found really good because its gets you to write a really detailed lesson plan covering the stages and the key points. Once I had my subject and breakdown sheet ready I considered some factors needed when teaching small groups such as the importance as not working as individuals ,but as a team. This is a factor that made me decide to use the task presented “apply a skin test “as this task involves interaction and teamwork the leadership style I am using is a democratic style as I want to encourage team building. Good communication with the group is essential, as this avoids people feeling isolated, and it encourages more productive work. Working as a group in these types of presentations lets learners share ideas and experiences, and offers an alternative to working on your own, it’s also a good way to solve problems. The key stages to working in groups are setting clear objectives, establishing roles delegating the tasks, agreeing deadlines, monitoring the progress, completing the task, and evaluation...all these factors are needed for the group to develop. Group development can be explained by the tuck man stages of group development, which are 1,forming,people want to be accepted by others ,individuals are gathering information on each other and forming impressions on each other.2Storming,important issues are now being addressed, individuals are coming out of the comfort zone.3 Norming, now the groups tasks are clear, the arguments are out the way, people understand each other better, and are listening to each other ,and pre-conceived views of other indiduals are changing, they feel part of a team.4Performing,peope have trust in each other, group loyalty and morale are high, tasks are completed as a team, but not all groups achieve this stage..5, adjourning this is the final stage; this is about completion and disengagement from the tasks and other group members and moving on. it’s also described as “deforming and mourning” In relation to my own teaching the forming stage of group development has an important point about forming impressions of people ,misconceptions of people and labelling people due to pre-conceived opinions can be unfair to the learner and ultimately affect the learning experience. How did I feel the session went' I feel the lesson went well, as stated earlier I found the job breakdown sheet very helpful in the respect of planning the lesson, and felt it made me put a more detailed lesson together. Looking at feedback from peers, I was really encouraged by the comments .my peers have stated that the job task was clear and concise, which I believe was down to the breakdown sheet. Body language was noted to be good with good hand gestures, appropriate pauses and relevant questions, and that reinforcement of what was being taught took place. Feedback also included that maybe my position needs to change during tasks ,so I do not stand in front of just one learner have written an action plan of areas I would like to improve in my teaching, this is after feedback from my peers , and watching the video of myself presenting would like to try to stop using the term “is that ok”when teaching ,also I would like to move around the learners more and not just stand in one area .I have also learnt from other learners when observing them and I am going to use a bigger range of interactive resources ,such as” hot potatoes”, and also to present PowerPoint presentations with less text and more pictures. In conclusion I have found this task really interesting and enjoyable, and have learnt a great deal from it, I have also found it is making a real difference to the quality of my teaching.
