Evaluate the UK university education system and how effective is it for Chinese students ' Britain has established a worldwide reputation for excellence in universities, but it also cause some problems on it.The criteria essay will explore the benefit of the UK education,and weaknesses and how effective is it for Chinese students.It will also compare with the Chinese system and look at the both of advantages and disadvantages . Three types of entities impart higher education in the UK- colleges, universities and institutions of higher education. Non-university higher education institutes also provide degree and other post-graduate courses, but they have to fulfil certain criteria to attain university status.The various qualifications offered by universities in the UK can be broadly classified into four divisions like degree courses, vocational training, diplomas and postgraduate courses. There are also sandwich courses whereby part-time work and real experience is sandwiched or interspersed between the course duration. While the first degree courses in arts and science are of 3-4 years duration, the diplomas and vocational courses are generally completed in 1-2 years with the Vocational and Technical Education Councils conferring the degree certificate. Postgraduate study may be in one of two forms - either as a work of independent research under supervision or a taught course lasting one or two years. The Universities and Colleges Admissions Services (UCAS) is the central organisation in the UK that processes admissions for entry. The UK has something in common with China,such as sandwich courses,degree courses, vocational training, diplomas and postgraduate courses.Although the sandwich courses cost a little more than a standard three-year degree, you will most likely earn a salary during your placement that will more than compensate for this.On the other hand,improve a student's chances of finding work after graduation.Good preparation for available positions.Transmission of skillsand the love of their job from true professionals.For students, apprenticeships are a passport to employment:Enabling them to discover company life,Enabling them to devise a career plan while continuing to study,Providing a certain level of financial independence. Why the UK can provide good quality of higher education for Chinese students ' The one of main reason: Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) is the external regulatory body that defines and monitors the quality and standards of UK higher Education.QAA has worked with the sector to develop a set of reference points, known as the Academic Infrastructure. Institutions use this, and other reference points, to guide their policies for maintaining academic standards and quality.( http://www.qaa.ac.uk )The QAA which monitor and seek to improve the quality of the University programmes.On the other hand,responsible for approving changes to courses and examinations conducts learning and teaching reviews etc.So Britain’s academic reputation in the world,trustworthy and has been widely recognized as world-class. But now,The university facing a big problem and becoming more and more serious.According to The Sunday Times reported - cut in teaching hours,growing classes sizes and spreading student.Students complain that teaching time is being cut, classes are becoming bigger and postgraduate students are being used as a cheap alternative to lecturers to teach seminars — despite universities taking increasing amounts of money from undergraduates through fees. (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/education/article6301614.ece 22/07/09) The independent learing is quite importance in university and recommend some idea about it.First:Take notes in the lecture,because notes as a study tool,while most students that they will have to take notes at university.In fact,some students even try to use tape recorders and sharing it with other students.There is three advantage by taking notes.1:Taking notes will help you to extend your attention.2:Taking notes will help you to remember what you have heard or read.3:Note taking helps you to organise the ideas you are learning about.Second:about online study.Sometimes you can search subject materials online if you don't understand some definition or point in the textbook.For instance:tutor2u.It's the leading publisher of e-learning resources for Economics, Business, Politics, Enterprise, Law, Sociology, History, Religious Studies and related subjects. I suggest you make a standard weekly timetable, divided into seven days, and then into hours.allocate equal time per subject and only adjust this when you need, e.g.if you find you are falling behind in one subject you should increase your time allocation to it.This will help to prevent you from spending most of your time on the subject you like the best and ignoring your weaker subjects.on the other hand,does not add up to at least 40 hours a week, you are probably not working hard enough. (Kevin B.Bucknall BSc 2007:30) About study,Chinese student get more stringent management and have to do a lot of homework in each day in China.The tutor will tell us which one is notice and how to review on the subject.They have self study course,sometime in the evening.The tutor doesn't tearching anything and give you a chance to ask question.So we can solve the problem immediately.Examination assessment is different with UK,your final exam determine your pass or not in each term.It can't complete assessment student ability.It will be better in UK.They use examination coursework research essay debate and opresentation for complete assessment the student ability.On the other hand,although we have relaxed study enviroment in UK,such as less homework and course for everyday.However suddenly can't adapt on it immediately.If the student can't self-contral that they will indulge something,such as computer game,social,entertainment,gambling etc leads to neglect of their studies. About life of campus in China,The student must be go to class at 8am everyday and has full schedule in all day.Normally 8am to 12am in the morning and 2pm to 5pm in the afternoon.But some subject has different schedule.They can choose morning or afternoon timetable.It means half day to study and half day to part time or internship in the company.In generally,4 year of university.3 year of junior college.In the last year,the student should be internship out of university.The university en-suit room designed is the same and can't provide single room for student.Normally 4 or 6 people share one room and one bathroom without cooking facilities.(University of sussex housing guide 2009/2010)If you feel hunger,The campus restaurants and campus shops can provide food for you.The boy and girl must be live in different building and the surpervision watch the exit.Compare with life of university,China was more fantastic and interest than British.more sport facilities and space for play sports.you don't need booking the playground,because they are alway for free entry.Joining a society is a good way of getting to know people,particularly from outside your subject area,such as football basketball business dancing cartoon etc.Between different class ,they have sport League,you can cheer for your classes. Even in the class,the student will organise some entertainment programme,for example quiz,a game or competition in which you answer question.So most of Chinese student feel boring the UK campus. During the period of UK time,Chinese student learned a lot of things.The eyes to see the whole world and best to look beyond temporary needs and problems and keep one’s present and future life in perspective.Communicate with a lot of different countries people and know about their folk custom or language.Furthermore,It will changes in students life.They have to finish many things by their own. And should be arrange their daily life.When the students grow up in the UK,they will found English is improved and communicate with foreigners more and more freely.This experience will be the one of most great memory in their life. The British and China has some different education ideal.The UK focus on Independent thinking.Teaching you how to analysis something,to solve the problem and research ability.In our class,we have Group discussions,case study,project study,debates and Seminar.Training students to time management,planning,under pressure,teamwork and other ability.The study method is quite different with Chinese.A good example of this is my experience in university,my subject is Business English.we have listenling,pronunciation,reading course.Although it can practice my basic english ,however it don't training practical skill for us.Because we need the analysis research and other ability to dealing with different situation in the business.So this idea and knowledge will affect student's life and career.I gains not only a academic certificate paper,but also study ability representation in my further. However, the society and the human beings and everything developing, education shouldn't fall behind. Many ways and ideas of UK education worth us to learn from to improve the educational system.
