DISTENDING A PARAGRAPH / METHODS OF PARAGRAPH DEVELOPMENT
1. Enumeration
- the easiest method of paragraph development; ideas are enumerated to produce a point
EXAMPLE:
More and more people are learning that the most vital feature in a feasibility study is the market. The first question asked is: Is there a market for the product' If the finding shows a slender or unstable market, the study stops there. The next factor to take into account is: What goods can the people produce quickly and plentifully' This needs a research into the flora and fauna as well as the natural resources indigenous to the area. Finally, can these goods be produced in such a way that they are competitive' If these three questions can be answered satisfactorily, work should start at once.
2. Illustration
- uses verbal pictures to clarify the point expressed in the paragraph
EXAMPLE:
As Pablo Leyran, a farmer from Alfonso, Cavite received his National Outstanding Farmer's Award, he said that the secret of his successful farming was multi-cropping. Mang Able started with coconuts and bananas. He understood early enough the vulnerability of crops subject to fluctuating prices and supply. So as not to waste valuable land space, he also planted his five-hectare farm with coffee, santol, jackfruit, guava, and pepper. When the price of one goes down, the price of the other crops pull him up. A surprise crop is the anthuriums which his daughter grows. “At first, I wasn't interested because it's something you couldn't eat,” he said. But he didn't want to waste the space and he had the coconut husks and shade needed to grow the anthurium. For now, anthurium profits surpass those all of his other crops combined.
3. Comparison and Contrast
talks of similarities and differences
opposing pattern and alternating pattern
EXAMPLE:
The big talk and the grandiose programs and the technocrats' gobbledygook are getting tiresome. The big projects need a large capital. They also need imported raw materials and sophisticated technology. Therefore it will take time for them to get off the ground. On the other hand, people want simpler projects which they can undertake without too many technical studies. The products needed are those which they can turn out quickly, abundantly and competitively. The raw materials must be easily available and the products indigenous to the area. What is important is economic recovery NOW.
4. Cause and Effect
- presents the causes that moves towards the effects, or begins with the effects and proceeds towards the causes.
EXAMPLE:
Here is a case of the first becoming the last in earnings because the report of the Filipino exporting firm says that Filipino exporters and producers failed to do their homework. Besides, they didn't study the market trend. They neglected to integrate backward and to face up to quality control. Moreover, they were not able to establish a history of clean and safe products and to improve packaging. Furthermore, government assistance was meager. To sum up, Filipino products failed to become competitive.
5. Classification
- grouping different items into categorising such as characteristics, types, factors, etc.
EXAMPLE:
A farmer who decides to concentrate on viable products can choose from four general types of plants: edible, ornamental, raw-material, or shade. Edible plants include grains like rice and corn, fruits like santol and mango, vegetables such as pechay or cabbage, or spices like pepper. On the other hand, ornamentals are all kinds of flowering and non-flowering plants used for decoration and landscaping. There are also plants that provide raw materials for other products. Examples of these types are rubber, palm, abaca, maguey, and ramie. The coconut may also belong to this type althoug the furit is edible. The last type are shade trees, grown primarilu to reforest barren areas of mountains. However, some of them are used as ornamentals. Ipil-ipil and narra are the most common shade trees. All these types of plants can be grown profitably, depending upon the soil and climate in the area.
6. Definition
consists of three parts: 1) the term to be defined; 2) the class to which it belongs; 3) the characteristics which make it different from others of its class
EXAMPLE:
Integrating backwards is the technique by which the exporters acquire interest in the manufacturing and production firms to be able to police the operations and cut costs. Thus, control of quality starts when the raw materials are gathered, not just while the manufacturing process is undergoing. This was the Thai and Taiwanese formula that won the goodwill of the FDA. Take the case of bagoong-making. The process is authentically primitive. Ferment fish in open air and let it acquire all kinds of dirt from cobwebs to hair, human or otherwise, to fat green flies. With that dirty beginning, it is very hard to clean up the process at the later stages of production.
