Essay Question: Should girls be educated for a healthier and economically more prosperous society'
GIRLS' EDUCATION
“Educate me, I will change the world”(Camfed). Camfed shouts these words to the word instead of the girls who haven't education opportunity. Camfed tries to emphasize importance of girls' education. Importance of girls' education started to discussed since girls' education is too low in many countries. Most of people and organizations such as World Bank agree that girls should be educated. Contrarily Ed Anger claims that women' place is in the home instead of school. Girls should be educated for a healthier and economically more prosperous society since maternal, child mortality rates will be lowered if they are educated, and their education will facilitate protecting against HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, if they are educated, fighting against poverty will be easier and girls' labor force participation rates and earnings will increase.
Girls' education provide that maternal, child mortality rates will be lowered. Because, women with education have more knowledge about illnesses. So they know how they live when they are pregnant and how to behave and take care their children. World Bank thinks in the same way that the women with more knowledge tend to seek medical care, be better informed about their children' nutritional requirements(“Girls' Education:A World Bank Priority”).
“Jamison and Wang found that an additional year of male education level is associated with a 3 to 4 percent reduction in child mortality. But the magnitude of the effect is statistically insignificant, whether it is child mortality for the whole population, for girls only, or for boys only. Female education level, on the other hand, has a statistically significant effect on all three measures of child mortality rates. The effect is about a 10 to 11 percent reduction in child mortality.”(Jamison and Wang 1).
Accordingly, the education of women who give birth and take care the children them has more effective
than education of men. If they are not educated they do not realize unhealthy situations and behave in an unhealthy way , for example they can smoke while they're pregnant. They can try to recover their children by other unhealthy way instead of taking them to doctor. On the other hand, in case of illness of their children; the women with education can figure out what they can do; applying first aid or taking them to the doctor. They can behave consciously to their children and their children will do the same to their children.(Jones 1)
Education of girls facilitate protecting against HIV/AIDS. Since the women can protect themselves with their knowledge about AIDS and its infection ways. Dr Muchina mentioned: “Education is a weapon that the world cannot do without in the fight against AIDS. We have to provide education to girls to keep themselves safe from AIDS infection and to depend on themselves.”(quoted in Zang 1). Dr Muchina pointed out that education is the most effective way to eschew AIDS and prevent its spread. In addition, evidence from a research in Zimbabwe shows that 15 to 18-year-old girls who are enrolled in school are five timeless likely to have HIV than those who have dropped out.(“Girls' Education and HIV prevention”). If they do not know about AIDS/HIV .They can infect their children. Their insufficient knowledge can affect their children. Indeed, %46 of Indian women don't know about HIV/AIDS. According to Reuters, women account is 40% of HIV cases in the country(Zaheer 1). On the other hand, the regions with high education level know how to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS. For example; Africa has the highest percentage for HIV/AIDS. It’s because of ignorance. Mothers infect their children without knowing that they are the transporters of this virus. Contrarily, European parts of our world which can be called as high-educated part; has the lowest percentage of AIDS/HIV.(Giraldo 1)
Fighting against poverty will be easier as girls' education rate increases owing to the fact that girls' education will help them to make more money in the future. Thus, they will be able to give support in favor of economy. To illustrate, in a review of 42 countries, Psacharopoulos et al. (2004) indicates that an extra year of secondary schooling for girls can increase their future wages by 10 to 20 percent.(Morrison and Sabarwal 2).Having thought of how important just one year is for future wages, it can be acceptable that there is a linear relation between education and wealth. If they do not have education, they can be forced to have more children , since they depend on their husband economically. It causes a poor quality life to have too many children. For instance, ”Recent studies corroborate what Camfed has observed and fostered on the ground: girls who complete primary and secondary education tend to marry later, have smaller families and earn significantly higher wages.”(UN Chronicle 1). In this way, handling with poverty will definitely be easier with contribution of women. Also ,Kingdon and Unni mention that women with higher tend to participate more well paid work than women with less education(Kingdon & Unni 12). As Kingdon and Unni emphasize, education will almost certainly help us to participate good jobs or projects by providing them new skills and abilities.
Education of girls provides that girls' labor force participation and earnings will raise. Because,
women can develop their skills by education and they become self-confident and independent. Therefore, they can have good jobs and opportunity to work and participate in economic life of society. Specifically, there are many businesswomen such as Güler Sabancı who is chairperson of Sabancı Holding and graduated from Bogazici University Management Faculty, Carleton Carly Fiorina who is vice president at AT&T and received many degrees from many universities. The examples indicate women with education can give a huge boost on economical life of society. Besides, The facts reveal that the rate of educated women increases the number of independent women. And the rate of economical independence of women increases the labor power. Women start to produce; production is Money for the economy . Briefly the women help by working vastly to their countries and to their families(Johnstone 1). If women aren't educated, society develops ineffectively without women' boost. Similarly, Marshallsay indicates that the women with less education generally join economy less than educated women(Marshallsay 1). Also, employment sector participation by woman’s age and education (1998) graphs indicates that there is a strong relation between education and women' force participation.(Sackey 26). Consequently, economy of society will be strengthen with contribution of educated women.
As I have shown, women' education is valid for themselves and society. Why don't girls have education' There is no doubt that women ought to be educated due to the fact that their education give a boost on society life in case of health and economy. Their education reduce maternal, child mortality rate and make protecting against HIV/AIDS easier. Furthermore, girls' education simplify fighting against poverty and girls' labor force participation rates and earnings will increase by women' education. They can change the world, if any opportunity is given.
