DISCUSS ISSUES OF EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY AND WAYS TO PROMOTE INCLUSION WITH YOUR LEARNERS. REVIEW OTHER POINTS OF REFERRAL AVAILABLE TO MEET THE POTENTAL NEEDS OF LEARNERS
“Equality means everyone is treated equally and fairly, it is linked directly to legislation and guidelines, which together drive the initiative. Diversity goes one step further by valuing the differences between individuals and by ensuring they are participating, you are including everyone (inclusion)” Wilson L (2009)
According to my job role as an NVQ Assessor, I treat the learners the same way I treat others, they should not feel less important to anyone, for example I inducted some new learners for NVQ some months ago and I have among these cohort of learners a Muslim who has different beliefs to mine I still treat her the same as all other learners and find her religion very fascinating even though I wasn’t too comfortable doing that.
Differentiation is one of the tools that teachers can use to promote equality and diversity. For students to effectively participate in learning, all barriers must be initially identified and then continuously monitored. The identity of every learner must be recognised and valued in order to promote inclusion by identifying boundaries and working towards overcoming those boundaries, for example they may be dyslexic, lack the income to pay course fees etc all of which can be coped with providing I know where to ‘refer’ learners for support rather than trying to heal the world by myself. When teaching in a class, the students will be coming from all different backgrounds & cultures therefore consideration must be taken to represent the diverse range of learners who access provision, such as -
• A variety of teaching methods to be used following an assessment of different learning styles
• Language used by the teacher should be non discriminatory and appropriate
• Materials and topics are presented in a way that are sensitive to equality and diversity
• Resources are adapted to ensure that learners can access information and to meet individual needs (large print, on tape, using symbols)
My role as an Assessor is to promote an environment that makes the learners feel relaxed and able to have a point of view without fear of ridicule and ensure that the learning environment is welcoming to all, e.g. neither too hot nor cold.
