Energy Resource Plan What is energy' Energy is any source of useable power. As a member of this homeowner's association I feel it is vital to explore how energy empowers us as a community, the importance of energy conservation, and how the seemingly subtle ways in which we take advantage of energy affects our residents and reflects on society. Energy is more than just a commodity. It's a privilege. I wholeheartedly believe that knowledge is power and through awareness and education, the establishment of specific energy conservation goals, and government efforts, we can create a society that is easier to live in and respect. There are two types of energy: renewable and non-renewable. Renewable energy is a source of energy that can never be exhausted. We can obtain renewable energy from the sun (solar energy), from the water (hydropower), from the wind (windmills), from hot dry rocks, magma, hot water springs (geothermal) and even from firewood, animal manure, crop residues and waste (Biomass.) On the other hand, non-renewable energy comes from sources that can't be replenished in a short period of time. We get most of our energy from nonrenewable energy sources, which include fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas, coal and from nuclear energy. It's common knowledge that we live in a polluted world. It is not common knowledge that we all contribute to pollution without even knowing it. We take the energy we use for granted, not realizing that since the majority of the energy we use comes from non-renewable sources we consistently pollute our air and water; in doing so we pollute ourselves. With that being said, there are ways in which we can contribute personally to energy conservation and a more eco-friendly society. Some of the most convenient ways to conserve energy include: turning off lights when not in use, replacing traditional light bulbs with fluorescent ones, turning off power supply/unplugging electronics not being used, and regularly replacing home air conditioning filters. Additionally, two great ways to conserve energy include using alternative means of transportation and recycling. Government efforts at the local, city, and state levels have way towards implementing greater ways to conserve energy such as effective mass transit systems and transitioning reliance onto renewable energy sources is an ideal broader vision that each of us can contribute towards. In conclusion, clearly energy conservation is not a one person job. However, just one person doing their part has potential to influence big change. I believe that we, as members of this homeowner's society, have a duty to do our parts: as individuals and as a community. In being more mindful of our actions, and more respectful of our choices, we have potential to influence local and federal change thus offering great hope for a healthier future.
