“Ella enchanted” is a fantasy novel written by Gail Carson Levine. This novel showed all the aspects of journey, including: physical, imaginative and inner journey. When the main character Ella was born, her fairy Godmother, Lucinda, gave her the gift of obedience. Whenever Ella is told to do something, she must do it, including promising never to reveal her terrible secret. After her mum died, Ella was sent to live with her stepmother and two nasty stepsisters called Hattie and Olive. Hattie realized Ella always does what she is told and started to take advantage of it, but Ella took comfort in her new friend, Areida. Hattie ordered Ella to stop being friends with Areida, "Ella, go tell your best friend that you hate her, cannot be friends with her any longer, and never wish to see her again." Ella had to obey it because she had the curse on her. After that, Ella was so upset and ran away. She went on a journey to find Lucinda to take back her horrible ‘gift’. Throughout her journey, she made friends with a group of generous elves, ogres and fell in love with the prince, Charmont. Charmont asked Ella if she could marry him. Ella realized that since she was under the curse, marrying him would put him and the country in danger. For example, she could be ordered to kill him and she wouldn't be able to do anything about it. To prevent this, she tricked him into believing she has eloped with another man. The prince was heartbroken and ordered Ella to marry him. Ella knew this would put him in grave danger, she struggled not to obey, and fought an inner battle trying to defy the order, wishing to protect Char and the kingdom. She crided out “No! I WILL NOT MARRY YOU.” and broke the curse. Eventually, Ella married the prince because they both loved each other and lived happily ever after.
