Educational Philosophy A philosophy is an analysis of the grounds of and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs. Philosophy can also be defined as a theory underlying or regarding a sphere of activity or thought. It is important to have a teaching philosophy because it gives you a mental set of beliefs to refer back to. Students all learn differently, but every child has an interest. Students will usually learn better if they are interested in the topic, so the goal would be to make every topic interesting. Unfortunately, this can not always happen, so we have to do the best we can. Making topics interesting can happen in many different ways. Personally, I like to do hands-on projects. Some students learn better working in groups or reading something out loud with the class. Other students learn best on their own. These students might need to listen to a lecture or see a PowerPoint to learn the material. No matter how a student learns best, a variety of teaching methods must be used to keep the class interesting. Students might learn best by a specific method of teaching, but if the teacher only uses one method, some students might not learn the material as well. Good teaching to me means a variety of teaching methods. A good teacher can make boring topics interesting and make students want to learn the material. This can not always happen with every lesson, but good teaching makes the majority of lessons fun and interesting, that way when there is a topic that can not be taught any other way, students can still learn the material. This just helps with the variety factor. Schools have a big responsibility to students. Parents bring their children to school to learn, so teachers have the responsibility to teach students the required material. Schools also are responsible for keeping children safe. Parents send their children to school and expect them to come home in one piece. Teachers should supervise students at all times to prevent accidents. Another responsibility is social interaction. Students make friends and learn how to act around people at school because that is where they spend the most time. Homeschooled children sometimes have a social problem because they are not around other students who are in public school. Students have an easier time learning social skills if they are around other students all the time. Education plays a critical role in society. For most jobs today, a college degree is required. If you are not “educated” society places you in a different category. Proof of education is critical for most jobs, especially high paying ones. If you don’t have a degree to be a doctor, you can not practice medicine. Education also consists of social skills and skills for specific careers. Without social skills, you would not be able to work with people in your career field. Education can be a variety of things, but without it, you are not as likely to get a high paying job. It is not impossible, just less likely. I believe that education and learning are vital to the world today. Without these and good teaching methods with great teachers, not much would get accomplished. Americans as a whole take education for granted, but we are the luckiest country in the world. We get to go to school and learn what we wish unlike most other countries. In some places, school is even forbidden or too expensive for most families. Those families would love to be here learning whatever they chose. We need to look at the world around us and realize what we have. Education is a gift and we need to recognize how valuable it is.
