Childhood from 4 to 7 years Physical development • Learn to run fast • Walks unassisted up and downstairs, alternative feet • Can balance on small areas • Throw and catch a large ball • Able to ride a small bike with training assists • Able to jump or hop and play games • Able to build blocks (i.e. Lego) • Demonstrates control of pens and pencils used for colouring • Has control to write their name • Control when using scissors • Can easily dress and undress themselves Communication and intellectual development • Speech is fluent and used correctly, uses up to 1500 words, talk a lot • Produce sentences and uses past tense • Identifies simple words and understands colours symbols, letters and numbers and can count up to 100, can read. • Can give their full name, age, birthday and address • Able to answer phone • Able to tell story while looking at picture of book • Enjoys jokes, singing and rhymes • If told a new work ask the meaning of it • Draws man with head, body, arms legs and features, and will draw house then colour pictures neatly. • Able to carry on adult conversations, asks lots of questions Social emotional and behavioural development • Enjoys and often has one or two focus friendships • Take part in group play • Has a greater sense of reasoning and co-operation • Needs a lot of comfort and reassurance from adults as they like to be liked • Likes entertain people and making them laugh • Uses language rather than tantrums or physical aggressions to express displeasure • Fears can develop ( i.e. dark, ghosts, things under the bed) • More independent and confident and greater understanding of what is right and wrong • Anxious to please • Has mood swings
