Suzann Cicconi English 1010 Expository- Final Draft October 24, 2010 Autism, what is it' Social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior are a neurodevelopment disorder, characterized with Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD). There are many developmental levels of autism, but they all have the same basic disorder. They can range from mild to severe. There are five different types of autism: Autistic disorder, pervasive development disorder or PDD, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett syndrome rare, but it can be severe, and Asperger syndrome, (this disorder shows many of the same signs of autistic disorder). All of these types of autism, and communication. History and the many cause of autism are of interest to researchers. Autism has existed for 100 years. It came from the Greek word “autos,” meaning “self.” It is described as a person who is removed from social interaction hence, an isolated self. Since 1900, autism has been a wide variety of psychological conditions. In the 1940s, the researchers began using “autism” to describe children that had emotional or social problems. Hans Asperger, a scientist in Germany, identified conditions which now is called Asperger syndrome. In the 1960s all the way up to the 1970s, treatment for autism was focused on medications such as LSD, electric shock, and behavior techniques. In 1943, Johns Hopkins University psychiatrist Leo Kanner worked with self-absorbed children with severe social, communication, and behavioral problems Kanner also suggested that social difficulties for the children were an inability of the children to have an emotional attachment with their parents weather such children have their fate decided for them to become autistic or only predisposed in an environmental factor. Autism affects six to eight out of every 1,000 children. It is defined with emotional and social problems. Autism is recognized in the first three years of life. One of the many symptoms’ of autism is children that have repeated body movement as rocking or even hand flapping. In my son’s case, Christian, he has the hand flapping and head nodding he does this when he gets excited about something or he is very interested. The child also could have certain attachments to objects. The attachments can be a very big thing for him. They become observed with object, with Christian doors it a big thing, he opens and closes them all the time and if a certian door is opened, he has to close it. Christian always has to have a balloon, sometimes it can get out of control. There can be up to ten balloons in the house Christian’s obsession with balloons does change but not all the time. PDD occurs in many people who have normal or above average intelligence, and may have uneven skill development Christians intelligence is sometimes lower than normal but in some areas he, has high intelligence. Language delays are another sign, in which means not talking in any form. Christian was around three years old when he finally said a few words other then mommy or daddy. We use sign language with him to get a better understanding to what he needs.”One symptom common to all types of autism is an inability to easily communicate and interact with others” (Autism Spectrum Disorder Health Center WebMD). There is a long list of pertinent causes for autism. Many researchers think that it is genetics other believe it could be environmental factors that could be involved. There has been a big vaccine controversy that was uproar in 1998, started by a London gastroenterologist named Wakefield; he has reported that children have symptoms after receiving their measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) shots. A year after this California’s health officials issued reports of a 273% rise in autism over the past decade. Many parents have blamed the MMR shots. By 2001, the Special Institute of Medicine committee threw out that theory and ostracized the Wakefield report. The neurodevelopment disorders are difficulties many of these children have to deal with this is all they know they know nothing else. To themselves they are normal, but to us they have a disorder. Christian was diagnosed when he was two years old, he went to the specialist early because his occupational therapy and physical therapy were seeing some of the signs that I pushed aside and really did not understand. The specialist told us that what Christian has is very mild, and that he would grow out of it. She never told us how short or how long it would take. Autism is a hard diagnosis to deal with. Most days are hard, his frustration levels are high and can be very trying. To my son, I love you with all my heart and soul. I pray that you become a wonderful person and achieve everything your heart desires. Your behavior and communication has fought you, but you fought back. History and causes may not help you, but maybe you will be the one to come up with a cure.
