A sigh of relief overwhelms me as I wake up at 6:10 in the morning. Historically, I've gotten up at 5:00 A.M. to get ready for school. All of a sudden it's like the five tons of brick have been taken off my weak shoulders. I walk to my closet where lies the one set of clothes I will be wearing for the rest of the school year. This coming year, the school board is deliberating on whether or not to make students wear uniforms. I believe students should wear uniforms to prevent them from violating the dress code. Parents can save money, there would be a decrease in students that get in trouble, and lastly there would be a stop to bullying.
If the school board decides to switch to uniforms, a benefit would be that parents could save substantial amounts of money. As an effect of informal dress, parents could come close to spending around $1,000 at the beginning of each year. Teenagers tend to buy trendy brands, and that can cause the expense of clothing to sky rocket. If the school board does decide to switch to uniforms, parents could save that extra money and put it towards something beneficial like college funds, or school funds. Kids have always made it a point to go out and buy clothes for the new school year. With there being uniforms, they would only have to buy one set of clothes as in oppose to buying ten sets of clothes.
Along with the benefit of saving money by switching to uniforms, there would also be a decrease in students that get in trouble. Statistics show that kids who are dressed formally don't act up as much as one would otherwise. In other words, there would be fewer students in ISS, OSS, and/or detention for ridiculous reasons. Additionally, teachers wouldn't be screaming repeatedly at students to either pull up their shirts or pants. When kids dress nicely, they also tend to focus more. When not focusing, they end up getting in trouble for numerous reasons. Wearing uniforms would just all together lessen the number of students getting disciplined.
Both saving money and a decrease in discipline would benefit with wearing uniforms, and while those two are supportive, a stop to bullying would also be beneficial. There are fights going on all the time because one person doesn't like what another is wearing. What one person’s opinion in style might not be in agreement with another. If everyone were to wear uniforms, they would all look at each other as equals. There wouldn't be any issues with bullying because everybody's viewpoint on each other would be the same. More students would start focusing on that person’s personality other than what clothes they wore that day.
Dress code violation has been a problem ever since junior high. The school board and I both believe that a conclusion to this problem would be to wear uniforms. Indeed, financial problems would decrease, there would be less students getting disciplined everyday for the same thing, and there would a stop to bullying. It's finally the end of the day, but I suddenly notice something unusual. I realize that I haven't yawned at all during the day, whereas my previous years, it was normal to yawn at least eight times in the first three hours.
