Examine the patterns of, and reasons for, domestic violence in society. Domestic violence in the physical, emotional, sexual or financial violence that takes place within an intimate or family type relationship and forms a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour. It may involve partners, ex-partners, household members or other relatives. Domestic violence has been happening worldwide for a long time, it follows certain patterns within society and different groups of people have different opinions in why it is happening. Domestic violence is the cause of the greatest mortality rate of women worldwide, it is even greater then war or famine. Patterns of domestic violence within society includes, that it is majority women suffering at the hand of her partner 99% of all incidents reported by women are violence committed by men. Less then 10% of incidents are of men being assaulted. Domestic violence is widespread throughout society, nearly one in four women have been assaulted by a partner at least once in their life, and half of these cases go on to repeat as more domestic violence is taken place after. Domestic violence is a constant problem which is still going on in day to day life in some people. 2 women a week die of domestic violence and 30 men a year. This shows that domestic violence can happen to anyone but happens most of the time to women. Also domestic violence tends to be fitted into certain a pattern of cases, for example it is more likely to happen with a working class family, there could be many reasons for this including the stress of having a lower income, or the fact that women are ‘the takers of shit’ for men who have just returned home from work. Also there is a link between alcohol consumption and domestic violence, this could be because of lose of temper when drunk or drunkenness itself leading to arguments between partners or children. Domestic violence can be very hard to completely wipe out, the biggest reason for this is that majority of cases will not be reported due to fear or love. But also the police see the women or men suffering domestic violence as ‘free agents’ this means that these people are ‘free’ to leave these horrible circumstances whenever they see fit. This is in fact wrong, majority of people will be trapped and unable to move from these distressing circumstance due to financial support, fear of partner, or loved ones being ‘held hostage’ by these abusers. Also abused partners may still feel love for these people, and they could be very loving and caring when temper is controlled, this will give the partner the thought that the abuser could change his/her ways and become non-violent. Domestic violence causes a lot of damage, and one case can go on to effect negatively generations later, i.e. abused son becoming an abuser himself. First of all there are the physical injuries which could in extreme cases cause permanent physical damage, but the much more dangerous aspect is the mental damage which will be received during, mental scarring can cause a much greater risk that physical damage, with mental damage it can lead the victim to become mentally unstable and so leading on to do very dangerous stuff. Also the victim life will become unstable as the victim will lose all trust and self-esteem leading the life of the victim to become very poor compared to the capability in which it had beforehand. There are many different views on why domestic violence takes place, first of all there are feminists. Feminists believe that men use violence against women to enslave or control, this may be the case in certain cases, but majority of the time it will most likely be blind rages of fury rather than calculated thinking of control. Radical feminists give the idea that all men use domestic violence to create a patriarchal system because of how the men will not be punished as we live in a society where majority of the member of the law (police, judges, lawyers) are men and so men are all working together to enslave women. These views are criticised because it does not explain how women abuse their partners or how there are a increase in women causing child abuse. Marxists feminists say that domestic violence in implanted by the bourgeoisie to allow women to be ‘takers of shit’ and letting the men take out there anger and frustration on the women rather than the government or bourgeoisie. This does not explain how domestic violence happens in upper-class families as well as the working class. Also it doesn’t explain why some working class families do not beat there wives. There are many patterns and reasons for domestic violence for domestic violence taking place, such a social standing, the past, or even controlling aspects, but it can still happen randomly because in my opinion I think that your circumstances can help or hinder you in what way you treat family members but it is really down to the person committing these crimes rather than blaming the society around them, the reasons for this is that domestic violence has appeared in almost every circumstance known to man.
