Dog Lady “Sure God created man before woman.  But then you always make a rough draft before the final masterpiece.” In the play, “Dog Lady” the women are very independent. Rosalinda is determined to run and travel the world. Jesse Luna is a strong willed young girl that speaks her mind. Finally, Maria Pilar is a single mother raising her children on her own. These characters are examples of how woman do not let obstacles stand in their way. In the play, “Dog Lady” Rosalinda is a young girl that is training for a marathon. If you ask men if they think girls can stand a chance completing a marathon they’d say “no.” Rosalinda is definitely not one of those girls those men speak of, however. Her determination to win is so outstanding; she wakes up early in the morning and begins to train. Because a lot of girls are prissy and rather watch the race than be in it, Rosalinda stands out to me as a very inspirational girl. As she runs, she shouts out “Mexico City, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, La Paz, Santa Rosalia, Encinada, Tijuana, San Diego, La Orange County, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Jose, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Alaska, the Bering Strait, Russia….” Rosalinda is one of the few people that are determined to accomplish their goals even if she’s seen as just a Chicana. Why is everyone so obsessed with looks' Well, Jesse Luna is Rosalinda’s little sister that can care less about how she looks. Her mother constantly tells her to stand up straight and comb her hair. Girls these days are obsessed with their appearance, but Jesse, even with a crush on Raphael, still feels no need to impress anyone. Besides the fact that she does not want to dress up “like a lady”, she has no problem telling people what is on her mind. For example, when Raphael was outside Rosalinda’s window calling out to her, Jesse outspokenly made fun of him. She’s a young girl that believes in herself enough to not care what other people think. Maria Pilar is an excellent example of a courageous woman. Because her husband past away, she is left as a single mother with two daughters. Although she prays to her Lord and dead husband, she’s still making it on her own. It’s not easy being on your own with children but Maria is doing it. She isn’t letting the obstacle of feeling alone stand in her way. She has responsibilities as a provider and she’s fulfilling her duties. I find Maria Pilar so inspirational because she reminds me of my mother. Faith and family is all she needs to keep her strong. Women have come a long way. In the play, “Dog Lady” Rosalinda, Jesse, and Maria are characters that represent different women around the world. “There is in every true woman's heart, a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity, but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.” –Washington Irving.
